What is cloud computing?

I often hear this term "cloud" "cloud computing". Is it related to servers and backing-up of files? Kindly please explain this in layman's terms. How can an ordinary internet user make use of this or benefit from this?

Think of cloud computing as doing the same thing as you usually do on your computer except that your data is now stored online, aka in the cloud. Usually cloud computing benefits users by allowing them to work from anywhere and storing their files online, allowing them to retrieve their work as long as they have an Internet connection and good browser.

wow that's cool. so it's like your external hard driver, i guess only bigger storage capacity and you access it online. Thanks for the info.
