In 1492 Christogher Columbus dicovered American. In truth he thought he dicovered a shorter way to India. He also was not the first man to discover America! Lief Erickson did 500 years earier! He discover America up by Newfloundland and Labador! You'd think we would stop celabrating Columbus day and celabrate Lief Erickson day! Columbus day, which was observed monday, is just another excue for the post office to be closed and the banks to be closed! So I wish this would change! The truth is out there but no one seens to want to admit it!

"Columbus killed more indians than Hitler killed Jews but on his birthday you get shoes on sale" Lyrics from The Goats.

I have heard Columbus killed alot of Native Americans. I believe he or other people brought sickness with them that the natives couldn't handle. If they didn't die to illness they were killed for othe reasons. They don't tell the real story in school! I remember we didn't hear all this stuff! I learned it as a grown up! Sad but true!

No! Erickson didn't " discover" America . The Native Americans did! So I see it this way. Columbus was the guy who discovered The Americas for continental Europe. And because most of us wouldn't be here if he hadn't , it is great to celebrate him. If he hadn't risked Everything to sail, We all , save the Native Americans , would be somewhere else. True it isn't as sexy as the 4th, but if there were no Columbus , there wouldn't be a 4th.

A lot of folks got here before ol' Chris, but he was the one that lead to settlement by the Europeans, so there's still a good reason - other wise, us Caucasians/Negroid/Eurasians/Mongol peoples wouldn't be here at all... It'd still be only sparsely settled by the native Mongol people who got here during the ice age (and that wasn't going to last)

I never thought of all this stuff before you and others mentioned it! If Columbus didn't discover America we weren't all be here today! That is so true! I will now look at Columbus differently now.

How can you be the first to discover something when there are already people living there. The indians were living there so that piece of land was already known about. Columbus was a horrible man I wish that my children didnt celebrate this day in school.

Yes the Native Americans were here first. Columbus day should be Native American Day! Columbus was nit nice! One of things he did was bring disease which the Natives could not handle! The more I talk about him the more I hate him and wish they didn't celebrate a day for Columbus!

My school used to be off for Columbus day in elementary school but eventually people protested about it saying he was not a man to celebrate since he did much damage to the native people. We then had to go to school on those days but now that I'm off of school, I don't know how they deal with this day. It's a confusing day.

Another good point! Christopher Columbus was one of many to didcover America. He did led the way for Europians to settle here. He did bring disease to American which killed alot of Native Americans! It is a good thing he did but also it was a bad thing. Alot of people know the good side but not the bad which is sad. I would be nice f both sides of the story would be taught in school! it needs to be taught but will it be is anyones guess!

The native americans were already here before anyone discovered anything! Shouldn't we have a day to honor them? From what I've read old Chris wasn't a very nice guy either... why celebrate a cad? If the PO and the banks and the military need yet another day to not work, let's make it Native American day! The truth is too ugly to admit or teach!

Columbus day should be Native American Day! You are right! They were here first and I have heard Columbus was a mean guy! This is one reason i wish this day was not celebrated!

There are some who believe that Eric the Red was the first to come to thee New World. While other claim that a group of Irish Monks sailed to the New World before Eric the Red. Then there are reports of Native Americans crossing the Berring Straights. Others believe that the Phoenicians sailed to Central and South America before then.
Columbus was only one in a long line of people who came to the "New World".

You are probaly right. Columbus is probaly just one of the many to "discover" America or the New World as it was called then! Never looked at this way until now!
