Why does Quebec want to secede from Canada? And why would Canada not allow Quebec to secede after decades of debating?

I think Canada should let them secede. Maybe they should insist that they do. Quebec is a huge financial drain on the country and the one province where people can grow up without ever learning to speak English and no one thinks they ought to learn it. I say, let them go.

That is why I asked. Some sources allege there have been debates (and ongoing) between Quebec and Canada for decades. If Quebec is a financial drain, as you say, then why would Cananda not let it go? Or is Canada just being thoughtful about the future of a former state?

"Quebec is a huge financial drain"? Rebecca does not share your allegation, Rollo. How can Quebec be that resourceful to Canada and yet be a "huge financial drain'?

I think it depends on what you focus on. Some Canadians admire the culture, some think that Quebec gets waaaay too much special treatment and federal money. There is legitimacy to both claims :)

It is not that Canada will not allow Quebec to secede. It is that Quebecois (citizens living in Quebec) do not want to. There is a political party in Quebec that is very pro-secession, and every once in awhile they hold a vote in the province to see if the majority of Quebecois want to leave. They have never won the vote. The majority of people living in Quebec want to remain part of Canada. Our federal government gives a lot of special treatment to Quebec, so much that people in other provinces resent it. Some people think this political party threatens the federal government with leaving in order to get more special treatment (a bribe to stay in the country.) A lot of French people in Quebec just want to be able to send their children to publicly-funded french schools, they don't want to make a big fuss.

Rebecca, I am glad to read your input. Several sources however made it sound like Quebec is only a part of Canada because Canada would not let Quebec secede. Thanks, for your viewpoint!

Why will China not stop their occupation of Tibet? Why will Syria not withdraw its illegal forces from Lebanon, despite being requested to by the Lebanese government? Why will Turkey not stop its illegal occupation of Cyprus? all the best urban
