Why pen drives don't have write-protect notch?

In older days, the Floppy disks came with a write protect notch. That was very useful when we take our floppy disks to a internet cafe for printing. Though the technology was not reliable, there was some safety when we use our disk in other computers.
Now, pen drives have replaced the floppy disks. Though the technology is more reliable, it is so vulnerable when we use it on other computers.
I just taken my pen drive to an internet cafe for printing some documents. It got infected. The worst thing is most Anti-virus don't detect it. Though it's not harmful, it's really making nuisance. (My internet explorer is displaying "dont use pen drive please" in the title bar. And my home page is reset to google.)
What do you think? Having write-protect notch on pen drives, is it possible? Why it's not there?

Hi Venkataraman!
I think almost most of us have experienced this problem. I used to have this kind of problem earlier whenever I go to a cyber cafe and use my pen drive for printing or any other purpose.
What you can do is if you have internet connection at home then just upload document to be printed as an attachment in an email and then go to cyber cafe and access it to take print outs!
To tackle this virus and trojans while using pen drive you can create an empty text document and name it as autorun.info in your pen drive.
And if possible use Portable Apps and install Clamwin portable Antivirus which protects the pen drive. Just go to PortableApps site and read about it.
As we know prevention is better than cure so we need to take precautions until we get inbuilt safety for pen drives as you have mentioned!
Happy Mylotting!

Yeah...some internet cafe charge too much for a half an hour browsing. The bad thing is they don't have change when I give them a 100 rupee note. I have to keep change for these people.
The link that you've given is for PC or for pen drive? I mean, is it portable? However, I just installed Autorun eater on my PC, which detects the autorun before it runs. It just killed the 'autorun' in my pen drive.

Hi venkataraman,
I too remember that technology in floppy disks.I think there are some pen rives which have the write protect notch, not too sure.
.We can ask pen drive companies to introduce this new system in the pen drives by writing to the customer care department. The cafe where i go scans my pen drive before inserting it into the computer for printing.I have to wait for some time till the scan is complete.I think it is possible to have write protect notch on pen drives.Only the company did not think of it before making them.

Yeah...on seeing your reply I've just searched for 'pen drives with write protect notch' and found some products. The product description says 'Write protection switch' and password security. I guess the switch they mention is hardware switch and not a e-switch. Thank you for your information.

Hi venkataraman, you are right that was an wonderful technology in floppy disks.. I think those kind of facility to be given on Pen Drives as well.. I too got my pen drive infected when i used it in my colleagues Laptop and my anti virus Software detected it but failed to remove it thus I had to format my Laptop completely and reinstall every thing from begining and also I lost much of the data.. Nice topic.. Have a nice day..

Horrible..Why can't a pen drive have a write protect notch? Why didn't the creators think of it?
The pen drive is so handy, can have high volume of data but so vulnerable that it can kill most of our time. One time or another, we have to use our pen drive on other PCs.
It would be better, if we can at least install an antivirus on pen drive which automatically wakes up every time we plug the pen drive in.
I wish somebody puts an end to the nuisance.
