Hi
I presume that you want an alternative to suet because you are vegetarian.
If this is the case ther is a vegetarian alternative to beef suet. I don't knoiw wherre you are from but in Britain Atora make a vegetarian suet and it is available in most supermarkets.
If the reason is more weight related this is a low fat recipe for dumplings - they're not quite the same as regular ones but are still very tasty
250g cottage cheese
50g flour
1 beaten egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon mixed herbs ( optional)
salt and pepper
Mix everything together, add more polenta if the mixture is too runny.
Shape mixture into dumplings, drop into hot stew and simmer fo ten minutes, or put on a plate, cover in cling film and cook in a microwave for 2 - 3 minutes until firm

thanks for sucxh a detailed answer. I'm not vegetarian. and yes i am english but i'm based abroad and i can't find suet to make dumplings, expecially the scottish clutie dumpling. I like the sound of the recipie though and i'll give it a try, i think i know the local words for all those ingredients which should make it easy. Thanks
