Staring at something you’re not supposed to!

When talking to somebody, have you ever been caught staring at something you shouldn’t? And was your attention called on it? How did you react? And how did you back-pedalled away from it. I was not really talking and staring at somebody (this is another one of those hypothetical situations). But, I was on my desk, staring at the window in my office and looking at the HR girls walking in the hallway in front of me. Or should I say, I was lost in thought and just happened to be facing the hallway in front when one of the girls was passing by. And a colleague of mine jokingly said, stop staring! My face must have turned tomato-red! How about you? Any experiences of looking, or staring at inappropriate body parts?

LOL....it's easy to be off in "the wild blue yonder" and not really be staring at anything....I'm sure I have been there and someone thought I was looking at them.

Yes it is! Specially if it is a great and sunny day. I sometimes catch myself staring through the HR windows in front of my office too. Wondering about 'the wild blue yonder'. Thanks Jen.

As far as staring at body parts that I really shouldn't be staring at, that isn't something that I've ever been caught doing. I know that this is wrong to say, but most of the time when I catch myself staring at someone it is because they look so very different from what I am used to seeing. For example, I might stare at someone that is rail thin or morbidly obese. Someone that is much taller than normal and possibly even a little person. However, I also try to stop as soon as I realize what I am doing.

I guess it is part of a 'what if' moment. When our thought process brings us into a situation which is not normal. Like, what if we were the one who is rail thin, or morbidly obese. I do that too! And I know it is rude, and I do try not too. Sometimes it is just difficult. Thanks.

Always. But never someone to remind me except my mother.

Hello wongchoiyee. I don't understand... Is it that only your mother that tells you not to stare? Thanks anyway.

OMG, yes not that long ago I was talking to an IT guy who is always funny and chummy every time you meet up with him on a business level. Then all of a sudden for some odd reason I was staring right at her groin area and for the life of me I do not know why I was doing this as I would never be interested in him, nor have I ever had any reason to be doing so. To top I lifted my head up so fast that it was obvious to him, this is what I was doing and let's just say neither one of us said a word about it.

Haha! I guess your reaction does create more attention to the thing that you're trying to avoid. I could see that as really embarassing. I could just wonder what was going on his mind as this was happening. But it is right to just forget about it. As I'm sure talking about it, will just create more attention, and thus more embarassing. Thanks.

Staring is rude but we can't help looking at something or someone for long period of time when we are focused on it. I have caught many people staring at me, different parts of me, and I have been caught by others as well. When I caught somebody, they will immediately take their eyes off me while occasionally trying to peep. While I'm caught, I will smile gently to them before turning away. It depends on it's a guy or women I'm staring at because my reactions are different.

There was a time when I get caught by a beautiful girl staring, I would be embarassed. But I'm way past that stage already. If I like somebody and I get caught staring at their face, I will continue to smile. And hope that like you, they smile back. Thanks.

This thing always happens to me! I hate it! I would just come out of my mind, thinking of something, then realize that I am actually looking directly at someone's eyes! I hate it! I mean, yeah, aside from looking at other people, I am actually looking directly at their eyes and therefore having an eye to eye contact without me being aware of it! Well, the thing that I most hate about this is that people think I'm staring at them because I got "interest" on them when in fact, I just don't know that I was actually looking straight to their eyes. When this happens, the person whom I look at will often look at me always and I just hate it when people always look at me. I also find this kind of embarrassing for me especially considering the fact that they might be thinking something... I actually have made moves to lessen somewhat this habit of mine. Instead of thinking while my face forward, I bow and think. At least I won't see anyone when I am bowing... :) And another thing I am doing is look at places where there is a less probability that there would be someone... I just really don't like the idea that when people is looking at you, they're interested. Maybe because I'm not like that.

Hello Bannybanzie. I guess it will be OK when you get caught staring if the person you happen to fizx your gaze at is someone you like. So, even if they look back, it will all be OK. But I guess it could really be embarassing if it is someone you don't like staring back. Thanks for the response.
