I believe we all must be idealistic so that it gives us some form of hope. However being idealistic means we also to be realistic with our thoughts, in other words know when to stop.

Being idealist might be better for other people than the idealist him/herself. Because, the human history practice many thinkers; most of them in some points were idealist. They did lots of good thing for human being, but what happened to them. They struggled so much for other people, whereas they didn't enjoy their life.

Do you mean perfectionist by this? If so, I think that a perfectionist is a person who always tries to improve himself, and his performances. This people may achieve a lot during their life, but they will never be satisfied, they will always chase something better. I don't know if it is good or bad, but I certainly don't want to be like that, although I have something in myself which pushes me many times to do things well. But I don't really think that I am a perfectionist, because I am satisfied with myself, although I hate to lose.

Idealist is one who doesn't believe in practical things. He always things and looks the things in a impractical way. Its very difficult to manage for many people with idealist person. The world has become practical and to survive we have to become and act in a practical manner. So, for me it doesn't really bother whether a idealist is good or bad but it really matters that being a idealist makes the things tough for other people.

I assume you are looking for a definition as opposed to our opinion on an idealist.
In short, it is someone that has a set of guidelines that they believe to be the perfect lifestyle, situation, or environment. It is a an imaginary, perfect model of a condition. This perfect concept is known as "ideal". The "idealist" tries to live up to that perfect model in they do. They try to base their lifestyle around that model to get their life to match that perfect model as close as possible.
As for it being good or bad, it is all about moderation. Everything needs to be done within acceptable limits. Any thing that is extreme one way or another is usually bad. Just because an idealist sees something one way, it doesn't mean everyone else will too. As such, the idealist should hold themselves to whatever standards they set for themselves, but should be respectful of others and not force their opinions and ideals on other people.
