Knitting with that odd left over wool

I have been doing a lot of knitting lately and found that I had quite a bit of different colour wool left.
So as to not waste it I thought I would knit a baby blanket. I used size 5 and a half mm needles. cast on 35 stitches and work 30 rows in plain knit and then change colour. Do the length by the number of colours and how long you want it. Then repeat this again with another length and then stitch them together.
This makes a lovely warm blanket and of course you can alter the sizes to your own requirements.
Well, I made one and all the family from children to grownups said could I make them one. Of course they all told me what colour, how long etc. So where I used to wool to use it all up I have now been buying more and more wool!
They are good for prams, pushchairs or just putting over you to snuggle up while watching television.
Have a go you wont regret it, well only in the way that you will be knitting this instead of jumpers lol

if you can knit it is just a case of casting on the amount of stitches you want and plain knit nearly the same amount of rows. Try it it does work and looks great.

You need to page down a bit but these are good directions and there are some links to follow for projects to use up the squares. I make at least one square of any yarn/yarns I use in projects for my kids. I have a bag for each girl and plan to make them each a afghan for when they move out or get married. I do this with the material I use also so they will have a quilt each too.

Knitting is a skill I never picked up. I really like some of the things I've seen people make. My great Aunt used her left overs to make hats and hot plate cozy's for her tables.

I've done something similar, except I just knit in plain rows until I ran out or got tired of a color, then switched at the end of the row. I started to make one with rug yarn once, making it in squares but never finished it. Making blankets is a great way to use leftover yarn!

I crochet but don't know how to knit....I used to take my leftovers and make mittens and donate for Christmas gifts to our Salvation army. That way it was used and also put to a good use. I love to think of some little ones wearing something warm over their hands and using the leftovers makes more sense then wasting it!

I have used my scraps in different ways too. I have knitted hobo sweaters with all different but coordinating colors of yarn, blankets and gloves/hat sets. I also have a weave it loom and make squares. These I use in blankets sweaters etc. I love the scrappy look. The squares can be knitted too. Another great project is shopping bags and purses. I love these as I no longer need to use plastic at the store.
