Sweet William

Yesterday at the adoption center I was working on the cages in the back, and when I opened one of them, there was an adult black and white cat named William. He had made a bit of a mess. His food and water had been knocked out of their bowls, and his towel was wet. He was partly under the towel. So I put my hand in, hoping that he would let me take care of it without too much fuss. He stuck his head out and rubbed my hand with it. Love at first sight. Anyway, I finished up, and went back to visit William, and he warmed up to me right away. So I was petting him, and one of the volunteers who had been there Saturday told me his story. He and his brother Spike had come into the group as kittens, and had been adopted out together. The foster mom had adopted them to a good friend of hers. One day she was visiting, and there was William outside the house and looking not so good. That's when she found out that they had taken Spike to a shelter and had him euthanized for no good reason, and that they had left William outside, where he had been beaten up by more aggressive cats. She immediately grabbed William and took him home and nursed him back to health. They are no longer friends. 75% of my day yesterday consisted of petting William. He is an absolutely lovely, sweet and gentle cat. Later I talked to his foster mom, and she told me she has to keep him and one of her other cats separate. Seems that William is so shy that her wussy cat, Diego, picks on him. Hopefully, somebody will come along and want a lap cat. Yesterday I was in a pretty crappy mood about all this. Perfect example of why I sometimes like animals a whole lot better than I like people. And then I got a nasty e-mail from a prospective volunteer's husband. Seems that it is all my fault that his wife and daughter showed up to volunteer, and were told that since a whole crowd of volunteers had shown up unexpected, that there wasn't a lot to do. Clearly this was all my fault, since I was the person who been communicating with her by e-mail. Funny thing is, the reason they were there wasn't a love for animals, it was community service. Yep, one of them broke the law, and I end up getting a lecture on etiquette from the husband, who wasn't even there. Just another reason, I like animals better than some people. PS I'm sorry to report that the iddle kitties that I posted pictures of last week did not make it. :-(

Geeze I am sure the girls could have volunteered in many other ways, as surely there is plenty to do in the adoption center. They could have actually thrown out the trash in the office as well. Shows that some people do not know the meaning of volunteering. Anyways Sweet William is a happy camper with you. I sure hope he gets a great home with a loving family. So sorry to hear the kitties did not make it.

Actually, if they had opened their mouths and said that they had had a long drive, I would have been happy to show them around. Even if there wasn't much for them to do, they could have seen what we do. I pointed that out to hubby, and his response was that they didn't have to. Yeah, and I didn't have to respond to his poison pen letter either!

Our cats are the lucky ones. The public shelters euthanize at least half the cats that come in.

William's such a sweetie. He probably needs to be an only cat with a stay at home mom, but maybe a female or a really mellow cat would be OK with him too.

I'm with you.. people suck! A lot! OMG I want to beat the snot out of William's ex owner! I mean, if you can't care for the cats, call the shelter or the person you adopted them from and give them back! Poor William! I so would not be able to volunteer at a shelter like yours. I'd end up taking them all home with me! It's heart breaking how some sweet animals are treated.

She seemed surprised that the foster wanted the cat back, and yet she had signed a contract with the organization stating that if she couldn't keep the cat she should return it to us. Almost makes you want to require that they read it out loud to you, and then take a quiz afterward.

Even that wouldn't work.. some people are just stupid and don't seem to understand. I used to have a friend who owned this dog.. well it was supposed to be her 8 year old son's dog. So the dog obviously needs to go outside, and she's screaming at the boy to take it out... the boy is busy with his video games and flat out ignoring the mom. So eventually the dog goes and pees on one of the kid's beds. What does mom do? Hits the dog!

I'm surprised William isn't the newest addition to your household? Are you thinking about it? As for the "volunteers'" husband, I wouldn't bother even responding. I'd let them do their (her) time somewhere else...

That would be cat #5, and I'm a little worried that one of my other cats might bully him. Tempting though. I did reply to the volunteer's husband, who did not accept my explanation (possibly he was expecting an abject apology), and was even nastier the second time around. Rather than let it turn into a flame war, I chose not to reply the second time around, and deleted them from my list.

I understand...poor William. He missed out on a wonderful home! The volunteers' husband needs to "get a life". Glad you chose to drop them from your list. There's others that could use your help/time/etc. Have a great Thanksgiving.

hi dawn how can people be mean to cats, it just does not make any sense as they give all that love that is in them then the adoptive mom just does away with them? shame. I am glad William got saved, wish I lived close as I would adopt him, lol.hope someone kind will adopt him as he sounds like a lovely cuddly cat to me.the reason those people were there explains her husband's ornery mood, they broke the law he he. we used to get community service people in the library helping me shelve books and most of them were like the husband you described not shelving books because they liked to read and were dying to help me, but because they had broken a law and they were teed off because they had to do community service.

Exactly, they broke the law, and then they're giving me attitude because we ended up not needing them. And apparently it's my fault that they didn't think to speak up and say, "look, we had a long drive to get here, is there anything we can do?" And Tarzan has to come around beating his chest and defending his family's honor. give me a break!

I already have four cats, and I suspect that Jason would pick on him. Hopefully the group will put his sad story up on the website and somebody will see it and want him!

I’ve mentioned here many times that I have a bumper sticker on my car that reads, “The more people I meet the more I like my cats…” It is how I feel a lot of the times especially when I read stories like yours. Any animal one chooses to adopt should become a member of the family and one is obliged to care for it for the rest of its life and most importantly love the pet. I believe animals need love just as much as humans do just like beautiful William who sounds so gorgeous…How can anyone dump a creature like that outside and not care for it?

Aww! William sounds like such a sweet cat! I can't believe he was adopted and the new family treated him lik sh&t! If I could I would love to adopt William! I can't have a pet were I live! If I could I would adopt a cat or a dog! I hope William finds a really nice home! He deserves it! Sorry to hear those kittens didn't make it! I hate hearing stories like that! At least people tried to save them! There are days, too,I rather be around animals then hummans! I glad I work out at the horse stable! I am around horses, goats and barn cats! They don't talk back to you or complain! I love it out there when some of the cats greet me by my car and when I walk in the barn to hear nickers from the horses! That is so much nicer then walking into work to hear the daily b*tching!

First off, I'm very sad to hear that the iddle kittie kitties didn't make it. Then there is the story of William. I can't believe that someone would let their little kitty outside and allow it to get so sick that someone had to nurse him back to health. It is a shame that you are on the other side of the country from me because he sounds like just the kind of cat that we like to have in our family. Our Buttercup is most definitely a lap kitty.

He's definitely a sweetie, but then I'm sure he'll find a good home. Meanwhile, whenever you're ready for another cat, there's probably lots of no-kill rescue groups near you.

It never ceases to leave me speechless as to why some people can be so cruel to animals and also why it is considered to be manly to go so called hunting to kill them. We have people here in Britain that get some sort of pleasure in using cats as footballs. My cousins husband is a volunteer helper in an animal refuge in Cyprus and we visited in the summer. At least the cats and dogs were looked after, feed and watered while they were staying there.

I don't get it either. I'm OK for hunting for food, but not any other reason. And using cats as footballs? Stupid, cruel, pointless...

That is so sad. I know how you feel. When I go to get treats for my cat I go and look at the ones up for adoption. And sometimes it just breaks my heart. I say a prayer for them to get good homes too. I would have them all if my husband allowed it. Don't worry people who abuse animals will get what comes to them. I made a real friend last week at the pet store and I can't get her out of my mind. But, I have a cat and I fear she would not take to another being around. Good for you on your volunteer work. The world needs more like you. My mom used to say," I wish some people were animals so I could like them".

my heart goes out to spike. how can anyone take a life for no good reason??? the foster mum made a good decision to no longer be friends. sorry to hear about the rude man. i really wonder if anyone actually believe that one bears responsibility for their own actions??? why is the new generation so fast to blame others? don't they know that when you point at someone else, your own four other digits are pointing at yourself? like you, i like animals so much more than people. my partner always comment that i am most relaxed with animals.

Your pet William should be more or less one-tenth of a petite teenage girl! If 75% of your day goes for this cutie cat ... how much time you have to spend to look after your daughter ???

Silly Sunny, my kids don't want me hanging over them all day, every day any more. And they get plenty of my attention when they do want it. Like Holly said, the adoption center thing is just one day a week, and sometimes the kids come with me. When they don't, they spend time with their dad or their grandmother.
