Signing and dating your artwork

Okay, don't know if I'm on the right page with this one... I seen various people sign and date their art work. But I'm not really 100% sure how they dated it. Do they date their artwork when it is 100% finished and they're satisfied with how it turned out? Or do they keep a mental note of when they started and when they're done they sign and date it with that particular date? Can someone please shine some light on this situation for me? Thanks. I got a drawing which I am finished with and I'm not all that sure on how I should do things correctly with it since I haven't drawn in a long time nor do I date my drawings... I do... But I'm not 100% sure since I sign and date my drawings when they're done. But this particular one's a gift. n_n;;

I just wish web page "artists" would date their work! I hate searching for something and then finding a ten year old, out of date page that hasn't had a visitor for years. Whatever form of art, a finished object can be dated. That lump of clay, waiting to be transformed, doesn't need a date!

Web page artists? Like the people on deviant art? o.o I seen some great art out there that hasn't been dated... Some are watermarked but not dated. :( Alright, I'll take your word for it for finished products - that's true that that lump of clay waiting to be transformed doesn't need a date. Thanks.

Oh! Those little thingies on the bottom that states when it's made.. -_- Yea that sucks if you're doing a research paper.

No, I meant ordinary, run of the mill, web pages.

I sign and date my artwork only when it is finished. I date it on the day it was finished rather than the day I started it. I have many things which I have left to finish later ... sometimes years! I would only date them when I think they are done (it sometimes stops me from fiddling and spoiling a good picture!)

Thanks for the input. :) Hey, is that one of your artworks in your DP pic?
