Sweet Bitter Success

Why is success so elusive when we go after it and bland and unsavory when we do attain it? Shakespeare's Macbeth is a glaring example who labors hard to become successful only to realize later that there is nothing thrilling about success. His means of achieving success are not definitely morally correct and need to be condemned outright. What about most of us who try hard to be successful through honest means and understand at a later stage that success is indeed bitter and not sweet as we once considered it to be?
