Yesterday was the first Great Courses I've missed.
Not to say that there haven't been a few I missed for various reasons, but this is different.
The last Great Courses before they/we took a break between Thanksgiving and New Years was on November 17th.
Granted, it was 2 days after my mom passed, but I still went and started the show for them. I told them that it would be my last time, but I was going to miss them.
Well, I really felt it yesterday when I realized it was the first Wednesday and it was Great Courses day. In fact, yesterday afternoon I drove pass the Manor, and really felt it even more.
I wish I could've been there. I miss my friends there.
You ever find something like this happens? You miss doing something you enjoyed because you don't have to be there anymore and have no reason to be there?

I actually missed going to work - for a little while. I had been at that job for 20 years. I didn't take me long to settle into retirement mode, though.

I hated retirement until I found mylot and I did not miss the branch manager that did not have the guts to tell her second in command that'
she really did not want to let me go as I had done nothing to warrant
being fired. but headquarters found out that i was fired because i was almost 80 and the second in command did not like elderly people working in what she thought was her library.Anyway headquarters fired them both and asked me to come back. but alas I was in the hospital having a shoulder joint replacement because I had had a f all and smashed my left shoulder so bad I had to have a bionic shoulder joint. even with a lot of therapy I have not regained much use of my left arm. so my days of shelving books were done for good.23 years on that job.

It's nice to have someone care enough to call and check up on you.

hi elicbxn forgive me but how do I answer this when I do not know if Great Courses is a video, a place, a tv show or what? I must have
missed something as I do not know just what you mean, help?On
its a show that you give for the nursing home or what have you'
and you started it for them. I imagine you will miss those
people. I would love to hear more about Great Courses.

Great Courses are both audio or video formatted college level courses that are not-for-credit but for continuing learning.
It was held on the independent living side of the place my mom lived, and when she still lived there, she went every week. I used to take her over and then to the dining room for lunch until I was told they really didn't want her eating the "regular" food, only the mushed up stuff.
When I started going the man who arranged it was starting the videos, but he go to where he was forgetting how to do it, and then he spent the summer in the health care center, so I said I would start it for them, since I had pretty much taken it over already because he had been forgetting.
We did a lot of history and biography. Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and Mark Twain, were some of who we learned about. We learned about medical break throughs by means of biography of the men/doctors who discovered them. Another was Great Civilizations of Asia Minor. We did China, from Tao to Mao, and the Vikings. Very educational!

I think we all do, but I believe you could have gone as a volunteer, if the memories would not have been too painful for you. They would have all enjoyed seeing you. I miss the residents I knew when I worked at a nursing home, and I also miss my adult disabled clients.

Two things: My grandparents' little Louisiana farm--no longer in the family, & my old job at the rare books & manuscripts library. I still dream of both! Sigh...
It's Orthodox Christmas Day--so Merry Christmas, everybuddy!

Thanks! That would be the Irish Orthodox Church, right? "O'Christmas?"
I love that quote, too; wish I knew who said it! I just swiped it from some site that posts quotes. I change my quote daily, usually. Glad you enjoyed it!

I think you would miss anything that you get in the habbit of doing. You would probably miss it more if it was something you liked. If you miss the people there, you should stop in every once in awhile and see them. I am sure they would be happy to see you. After awhile there will be something else in your life and you won't miss it anymore. Also, without your mom, after awhile you won't have anything in common with them.

Well, I changed my hours at work so I'm working 5 hours every day. Yeah, I could go over, but I really like that Wednesdays are as long as used to be. Wednesday is also my "cat litter" day, so when I get home from work I have to do the cat litter, it used to make for a very hard day what with going to work, going to mom's, going back to work and then coming home and doing the cat boxes.
I have been thinking of stopping by, but so far I've not had a lot of free time, and since I'm in a borrowed car, I am trying not to drive it too much.

Hi elic,
I have been away for a while because I didn't feel that I was doing mylot justice since I don't always feel physically well enough to participate. I have no idea about which you speak of but Idecided to begin again at least psrt time and your post was the first I read. How appropriate to the way I was feling. I hope you can explain to me what your discussion is about and thanks for getting me back on track.
