The American Dream. What is it? In 1931 James Truslow Adams said "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Dream (note: OPPORTUNITY not handouts) wow sounds great. Benjamin Franklin (you remember him) describes his way from a poor, unknown son of a candle-maker to a very successful business man and highly acknowledged member of the American society. Franklin creates the archetype of someone coming from low origins, who, against all odds, breaks out of his inherited social position, climbs up the social ladder and creates a new identity for himself. Key factors in this rise from rags to riches are hard work and a solid moral foundation. So in order to achieve the American Dream, we have deemed that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. With these freedoms (see Bill of Rights) there comes personal responsibility. Meaning responsibility for yourself. Responsibility for your own housing, healthcare, food, energy, actions, decisions and the list goes on and on. I am curious why people believe that We should have all of these freedoms and the government should take care of them. When do you stop depending on your government and become free?

Without a personal relationship with our Creator, the Giver of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, our freedom can fall into the hands of the kind of tyrannical government we are now oppressed by. Your quotes from Franklin, King, and Orwell are accurate. Our personal responsibility is to love, respect and "abide" with God, love our family and country, and "Know the Truth" since only the Truth (Our God) can set us and KEEP us free.. We need to do what is right and honorable and stand for truth and justice. We in America have exchanged our birthright for a "mess of pottage". The American "dream" is now an American nightmare. When we reject the God who gives us life, liberty, protection, and "exceeding" abundance "beyond all that we could ever hope or DREAM of", we reject the dream. We murder our unborn, tolerate evil of all sorts, REFUSE to let God be God in the marketplace and in our lives, and outright reject HIS truth and HIS WORD; thus the dream evaporates. It is God who made America a land of opportunity and blessing. It is He who gives us good success. When we deny our source, we get to wallow in the lies and cesspool of our own making. Government becomes the antithesis of free will choice and God-given rights due to the fact that greed and power are part of "fallible", fallen man. Orwell's "telling people what they don't want to hear" refers to the fact that speaking truth is a threat to those who reject it, since it means they have to become accountable for and change their behavior. "Truth is sharper than a double-edged sword." And, again, success is better measured by good and honorable character than by worldly position or possessions.

You brought a very important discussion to the fore. "Responsibility" is hardly a word understood by many. We are rather taught "blame" - circumstances, a parent, poverty, situations, etc., everything but owning the consequences of one's own behavior; they are even removed, in politics covered up or whitewashed. It is hallmark in our daily lives, in government, etc. We tolerate evil and punish good; God had a lot to say about that. And we even blame God. And we blame George Bush for everything.

Our founding fathers wanted everyone to acheive the American Dream and that is why they drew up the Constitution such that it is not a document that tells the government what it can do and what the people can not do but rather put limits on government so the individual could succeed. Now days politicians think they know what is best for everyone and know best how to spend you money. Listen to any of them talk about taxes and they feel entitled to the tax revenue and are put off when the tax payers want to keep more of their money.

The American Dream (which includes the right to succeed as well as fail) has been bastardized by "The American Guarantee". People who demand guarantees don't care who pays, whose freedoms are lost, or how it's paid for in the first place. They care about being taken care of. period. They resent freedom because freedom puts the responsibility on themselves.

that exactly right. There is a HUGE difference between the two. I believe that the people looking for the guarantee need to head on down the road. Go for the country that our fore fathers worked so hard to get away from

Hi, I read the lines and I like the words said by James Truslow Admas. Honestly I never knew about such think like American Dream. I am from India and know a little history of the World. I leave this topic for the American people.

Thank you for chiming in. If you look into it, The American Dream is a very awesome concept and our governments current path will abolish this once and for all. Unfortunately most Americans dont see it.
