Do You Have Easy Access To Your Loft?

Whilst away over Christmas to my folks in Blackpool the hot water wasn't hot anymore, here in Carlisle so John made arrangements for his sister's boyfriend Jimmy, to come and give him a quote on new central heating, as ours is old and not very good and to sort out the frozen pipes in the loft.
For some reason, the whole family had to be involved in this and my FIL used our small step-ladders to access the loft, which is no mean feat, as the skylight to access it is in the wrong place.
To cut a long story short...my FIL is supposed to be bringing his big ladders round in order to place the cover back on the skylight hole. Why is there a hole? Well, the central heating had to be on all day, every day for two days in order to thaw out the pipes in the loft (as in, heat rises). The pipes did get lagged last year but tiny parts of them aren't, hence the reason why they froze.
I've just mentioned the uncovered hole in the attic ceiling to John and he just went, "Hmmm!" That was it! If I could get up there myself I would but I can't, it's far too high up for me.
Grrr! Sometimes I wish we had lower ceilings! How about you? Do you have easy access to the loft?

I need to get up to mine more often. It is a good place to keep "stuff"

Hi Janey,
We have a high loft too and we have a ladder but I cannot riach to go up on it, hub can, when I do stand at the top of the ladder, I am just too short to climb into the loft, we have all sorts up there as hubby is very fond of putting away my stuff, its a treasure trove of all my things, books, teddies, dolls, all sorts, I just wish I can go up there and bring them all down.

This sounds like what I call an attic. I have no plumbing in my attic, however. I do have a furnace in the attic. It is a mess any way that you go. Years ago my first husband put a pull down stairway/ladder to give us access to our attic more easily. Yes there are things I say Grrrr about and wish I could do for myself instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

I volunteered to allow the Church to store stuff in my attic, but they had to put it up there and take it down.
I also volunteered a friend to put their baby stuff up there, in case they had another baby.
The Church took the Christmas stuff down and I never heard about it again. The friends came over and took it down before they moved out of state, and got rid of it.

I'd love one of those pull-down ladder thingies. I'd be storing John's crap on a regular basis.

When I moved into my bungalow last summer I got a handy man to put a loft ladder in. That was one of the few things that the handy man did successfully. He spent a week making the lounge ceiling smooth then all the material came down! Luckily I was out at the time with my children and our dogs weren't hurt. He painted the lounge yellow and it should have been cream. Needless to say I from a well respected builder to put in my new kitchen and he did an excellent job. When I have more money I want the builder to insulate my loft. There will be deep insulation and then a patch with thin but powerful insulation. On that area I will be able to put my storage boxes.

Oh dear! Yellow instead of cream eh? Perhaps he was colour-blind? He's in the wrong job if he is but you never know.
We have insulation (it's not very thick so probably needs replacing like a lot of things in here) but Mum doesn't have any at all. She wants it sorting out but the people who are willing to do it for free (as my Dad is in his 70s) won't take the wood out of the loft first..that's my Dad's job, apparently! This frustrates my Mum no end but the house is a lot warmer than it used to be. She only had central heating put in about 6 years ago!

The loft is a place I would rather avoid if I can because there is all the insulating stuff up there that if breathed in causing coughing, so I have to use a mask. And not only that if it gets underneath clothing, it will irritate and itch for hours afterwards. We only have a bungalow, but the loft door is small and not an easy place to get into and once I was at the top of the ladder and the next thing I knew I was laying on my back on the floor because the ladder slipped as I was tryhing to wriggle through this tiny opening. I was OK and we had a bit of a laugh about it afterwards.

Oh dear, poor Derek! My cousin in Blackpool has some pull-down ladders but the trouble with our house is that the access point is in the wrong place!
This is what is commonly known as "The House That Jack Built!" and yes, it IS jinxed!!

You could leave R up there if you had easy access. He'd never be found!

Never and LOL, if I did I suppose it would the area of the house that no one ever dare walk into as all my stuff could go in there until I bulk it to the limit.
I would not need them lower as it would be the area I would never go back
into.

If my ceilings were lower I'd take all the naff poles, curtains and blinds down and replace them..if I had the money, which I don't, so it's a waste of time mentioning it!
