Southern Sudan

United States

As many of you might be aware the residents in Southern part of Sudan have been voting the past week about becoming the newest country in the world and separating from the North. Over 2 million have been killed in the war and ethnic cleansing that has been going on between the North and the South and I wonder can they really become friends? Will the North allow the South to prosper? Will the South opt to becoming an Arabic country or prefer to stick being Christian and who will recognize the country and who won't? So many questions so I guess I wanted to get your thoughts on this topic.

I think it is about time this happens, to be honest, and I hope this country will have a great future. But to be honest, I don't know for sure that this will indeed happen, but I certainly hope so. What I do think is sad is that I heard that this new country will also be the poorest country in the world, even when it is just founded. That is very tragic, and I do hope they have the necessary infrastructure to function as a country. But since 97 % of the people there (or so I heard?) have voted for the independent state, I think it should really be founded. They know best after all!

I guess its future depend son the border as thats the most usable land for agricultural purposes and both north and South want it. I think depending on its outlook and relationship(where it picks its friends) the International community can help it a lot and help provide the infrastructure needed.

It is good for people to determine their destinty and if they agree to be an independent country, I think it will work. other Arab nations might not agree, but may if the new country is pro-western, then it will recieve alot of support from the west, especially america.

My fear is nobody will give them peace as the south is home to 80% of the countries oil.

Sudan is one of the poorest countries in Africa and it doesn't have the benefit of tourism like its neighbor Egypt. It is a great shame that many people have been killed in the so called ethnic cleansing. It the split happens the south might become much poorer. The north might stop the south from becoming prosperous. In the world we have North Korea and South Korea, two very different places. Nowadays we have the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Good luck to Sudan and its people.
