man this afternoon sucked big time in my house. I had lost my heat. It would kick in and blow air but the air it blew was barely warm. So I pay extra each month on my utilities for an appliance protection program. They repair or replace the major appliances listed etc. Anyhow it turned out to be a simple repair that needed to be done. The flame sensor was dusty and therefore the flames were not as high/hot as they should have been so it cut the flames off. Now I am toasty warm once again. I asked the service man what a repair like this normally costs. He said, "$125 just to knock on the door. This repair would have cost about $160 or a little more is all." So that little extra I pay each month has paid off already for me. Do you have a protection plan/extended warranty on any of your major appliances? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

hi Grandpa Bob oh when we were still living in our apartment befor e myhson lost his job and all hell broke loose I had that on our old GE refrigerator and it had paid off. even though it ate more electricity a modern one it did damned well for an older refrigerator. Like a lotof things we lost that too when a third of our belongings were confiscated in that month of hell. my son had miscued in hiring too small a moving truck and two nincompoops who came off craigslist and said they were movers, and had not the foggiest idea of how to store things compactly in a storage unit, then my son goofed in not getting a big enough storage place so we had to leave some things behind as we had to be out of there that evening or lose everything. well thats water under the bridge now but if my son ever gets a really good job again there are a few things we will need to buy to set up an apartment again. That protection plan had payed off even is we did lose the old refrigetator.

Wow, that's great. We don't have anything like that because our heat is from an edenpure heater. It works great if it is not too cold, once it starts getting into the 20's or lower, we start feeling to cold. But better than what we had before, and that was kerosene that was dirty and smelly..:P

Here is a link that talks about it, but I can't find the model we have: http://www.edenpurestore.com/?gclid=CNfxsY3y06YCFYnc4AodKnExHA They not only heat, but purify the air, and it has a humidifier, which is great, because our house is very dry in the winter.

It was only a couple hours but the thermostat said it was 64. So not really cold enough to put a coat on. Just a long sleeve shirt and slippers and socks. Dad never noticed it was chilly in the house. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I don't have that, I always assumed they were scams that would never cover anything that actually happened or there would be fine print that exempted most of the normal malfunctions. Last year the gas repairmen had to shut off my gas for about 90 minutes and man, it got cold FAST!! Since then I don't take my heat for granted. I wonder if I should get that protection. My furnace is 12 years old now and still runs great but one never knows!

No I don't but I am in rented accommodation so I don't need to as it falls to the Landlord But it is good that Home owners do have them as you say it can end up costing a lot of Money if you do not have Protection Plan

Grandpa Bob my hubby is a plumber and i asked him about the problem that you had. My hubby does not charge that much money for a house call he just charges 40 dollars. and he also told me if the sensor was just dusty he would just clean it. Maybe you had more of a problem then just the sensor. And we dont have a porotection plan on that kind of appliance.

I do, but not thru my utility company, that's the city and getting the city to do anything extra is impossible! but getting them to come fix things, that's a whole other story!

Hi grandpa Bob! Good to see you back here! I can't imagine life up north without heat! No way! With all that snow you get and all that cold air, I'd be under so many blankets and comforters that one wouldn't be able to find me! lol Glad you were able to get it fixed relatively fast! Hopefully you'll have no more problems from here on out.

No I don't have an extended warranty on any appliances. Now if I had something like you have thru the utility then I would consider it. I know we need a new furmace as it's as old as I am and I know one day it will give out and we'll be s.o.l. Isn't it awful that these people can charge such an insane price to just show up?!?! I think one of my kids will need to learn a trade so they can charge such fee's.

Hey GB! I don't have my own home, but know all about the costs of keeping up on heating/airconditioning. My ex-fiancee' was in the business and I know that having a contract is definitely the way to go. I have an apartment so my "gas heat" (which is totally out of my control and quite sparce) is included in my rent. But, I can't do anything to make it warmer if I am freezing either! You definitely did the right thing getting the "extended program". Sometimes I am leary about those things, but with some appliances it really is a necessity! Stay warm, I'm sure trying to!lol

I have been through 4 winters without heat when I was in college. Because in that area my college belongs to, winter is very short. So people think it is not worthy to add a heat to every dorm in college and all the college dorms don't have heat in that area. The student from near around were used to this climate very well because they grown up here. But for our strangers, it was a very hard time at first. I had to put on all my coats and sweaters to avoid the cold inside and outside. And that made me too fat to move, so I did very very few sports in winter period.

No I don't but i really need to and want to get it. At least for the plumbing, heating system. Those kinds of repairs really cost alot. I'm glad that the repair wasn't a big deal. Its been a really cold winter, you need heat.

Brrrrr. No we do not have that kind of an option here. My daughter told me about this when they had to have their sewer line fixed or cleaned. She said it was part of what they paid all the time. I am glad you are warm now.

I don't have any extended warranties -- my stove and washer were second-hand when I got them, and my fridge is 10 years old now (never gave me any trouble). However, I wish there was something I could do about my plumbing... (yup, forgot to leave the tap running last night).

It is nice you got that taken care of like that. Right now our furnace is original to the house which is 17 years old. We get the furnace cleaned every year, and 2 years ago our guy (a friend who is in the business)said we should start saving for a new furnace as he did not think ours would make it another year, so far it has been two seasons and it is still running, but we are thinking it could go any time, but we have money set aside for it because we listened to our repairman. It will be nice if we can squeeze through a these next few months without having to replace it, but I am sure that is just wishful thinking.

Grandpa, I am glad you are toasty warm again, Yeah! I know that has to be a great feeling. As for me my back up plan is actually free as I would have to rely on my boyfriend to turn up the heat. We live in an apartment where as the landlord forgets we live here and at times I swear he forgets as it feels like we are sitting outside. It is 30 below zero Fahrenheit below zero here now so even the spitting air that comes out from time to time is not enough. We will be moving next summer as this is our 5th year and we cannot take it any longer, amongst a great many other issues. We use to have a landlord a year ago here who use to fry us out, she passed away and now we are stuck with this one for now. Glad t hear that you made a wise decision for the extended plan.
