I have been hearing various things about Rift, the new MMORPG that is currently in beta testing. The opinions of those that play range widely and I was wondering if anyone here has played it and what they think of the new game. Do you like Rift? Is it better than say, Everquest2 or WOW or D&D Online?

Because I was lucky enough to apply for RIFT beta testing early, I have been accepted to play the first beta release. The overall quality of the game is amazing. The graphics are nice, the plot is enticing, and the fighting is fantastic. However, the pricing is not. The makers of Rift demand plenty of money to play the game. Beta testing is free, but when the game is released, there will be a monthly fee, which is unfortunate. I had thought the game was fun, but was extremely disappointed when I found out that the monthly subscription was going to be expensive. Compared to Everquest2, I would say that the graphics and combat are better. However, when compared to WoW and D&D, the overall quality is not as great. Rift is basically a mix of many good mmorpg features. If money is not a problem, go for it! It will be worth if if you start from early in the game.

Ahh, finally made contact with another gamer here! I will be hard pressed to leave EQ2 as I am getting it for free right now as Guide, but there may come a time when I will need to go. What is expensive? $15/mo? $20? The AB server I am on is an RPserver. Is Rift a good game for RPers? DDO wasn't and Wow was just plain... well. I won't go there. I know Rift is still in beta but can you tell me how an RPer might enjoy the game at this time?

You did not answer my question about the RPing. Any possibilities? Is there plenty of places for taverns and housing and other places for roleplaying?

Oh, sorry about that. Sometimes I go off topic when I talk about games. =P Well, I have not played EQ2 extensively, but from what I have been able to gather so far, I would say that RPing is better in EQ2. In Rift, it is very free. By that, I don't mean by price, but how you play. You can do just about anything you want. For example, you can roam wherever you want, whenever you want. You can choose to follow the plot or not. You can build your character stats in numerous ways. Another game with a similar amount of unlimited stat build options is runescape, if you are familiar with that. There is also PvP in Rift, but I'm not sure how you might feel about that.
