My hubby is a hoarder...

I am packing my things at the moment, and I divide the things into 5 different groups: Things I am going to keep, things I borrowed and have to return to the owner, things for our garage sale, things that I am going to donate to charity and the garbage.
But something strange happens over and over. I place things in the charity/garage sale/garbage pile and a few hours later they "jump" back into in the pile of the things that we are going to keep
My husband wants to keep the things that I no longer need, and whenever I want to throw something way, he screams "No, no I want to keep that, I can use it" and the pile of things that were supposed to leave the house gets smaller and smaller....
I think it is fine that he wants to recycle things etc, but if we have to keep everything there will be no space for us in the house
It is hard or easy for you let go of old things? Do you give up the things that you haven't used for a long time or do you keep them in case you might need them one day?

My husband also says that he isn't hoarding, he calls it saving or recycling. I think it is fine that we wants to recycle some of the things and I also understand that some of the things have sentimental value, but there has to be a limit. I don't want to live in a house like my great-grandfather's. He didn't throw anything away for 60 years, and in his house there were things everywhere.

And it is unhealthy too! Keeping things or hoarding too much will result to behavioral disorder. From the episodes of Hoarders I learned that it is a disorder and should see a counselor or therapist if it is affecting your life and others as well.He should see that show. Oh my gosh. The hoarders there hoards foods and they are rotten.

I sometimes have to talk myself into getting rid of things that I really no longer need. You can like an item without really needing it and that's where I have a problem. For the most part, though, I don't like clutter, so when things get to be too much, I start getting rid of them.

I don't like clutter either, and I don't want to have too many things. If it gets too much I usually go through my things and give some of them away to friends or to charity. That way I get more space and someone else gets the chance to enjoy the things that I no longer need. When it is a thing that I bought myself it is not difficult for me to get rid of it, but it is a little different if it is a present from a friend or a family member.

Hi Porospino!.
I usually find situation like thats when we do our annual cleaning. We usually very enthusiastic to get rid our old stuff like cloth or bag my mom will said its still in good condition you can give it to one of our cousin or to red cross. So we usually big plastic bag at home. If we don't wanna to wear certain thing we will need to clean or washing it before placing it in thats big plastic bag so at the end of the year we can give it to red cross or when someone visiting and like to have it they can have it.

Giving old things to your relatives or to red cross is a good idea. That way the things aren't wasted and someone else is able to use the things that you no longer need. Before we moved I went through my things and I found many things that I wanted to sell or give away. At first I asked my relatives and my friends if they wanted some of the things, then we sold some the things at a garage sale and donated the rest of the things to charity.

We don't need many things. Most of the time we pile up more than we can even use. I like to keep books and things that have a special meaning for me. But I hate to keep stuff that I don't use for a long time. On the opposite, I'm happy to throw away old stuff. I feel some kind of relief when I do it.

I understand what you mean, because I feel the same way. I feel a kind of relief and happiness when I give up old things that I no longer use. Of course there are things that I want to keep like presents, books or other things that I like, but I don't want to keep things that I no longer use. I only want to keep the things that are important to me and the things that I really appreciate
My husband is completely different, he feels bad when he has to give up some of his things, and he doesn't feel the sense of relief that I get when I give up old things...

Yes, some things have sentimental value. I have become quite good at giving up old things, but there are still some things that I want to keep for instanse the things that I got from my grandmother. I have some old books that she gave me and some other things that I also plan on keeping. I have moved many times and every thing I go through my things and decide what to keep, but there are certain things that I just know that I am going to keep like those things from my grandmother.
