In my country there is a few definite signs that winter is coming or going away - cold, snow and mandarin fruits in shops. yes, this may sound a little bit funny, but when there is a winter then most people eat mandarin fruits much more than any other. You may think why? Because mandarins are cheaper than oranges, bananas and other fruits, also you can take now only one big fruit, but many, many more, put them in bag and then eat with your family without fruit dividing into several peaces. Now when winter have left only few months to be "in charge" of my country weather mandarin fruits will loose their popularity too. Maybe they have the same healthy vitamins in them, but still its almost tradition in here - to eat mandarins at winter, not any other time period of year.

We only see mandarin fruits during the spring festival here. And it is the spring festival here now which we normally call chinese new year. Mandarin oranges are everywhere in the market and the price is reasonably cheap even though they are imported fruits. My country is a tropical country and tropical fruits like bananas, pineapples and papayas are sold cheaply here.

mandarins - delicious mandarins
Oranges and mandarins are from the same citrus family. I think both contain the same amount of vitamins. I am not too sure why people prefer to eat oranges but I have no problems with either one.

But why do most people prefer to eat oranges rather than mandarins? i have heard that they are full with vitamins the same like oranges.

Here in India too, winter announces its arrival with the oranges...most fruit vendors will stock oranges in heaps and people just buy them in dozens. Even while I write this respond, I have a peeled orange in my lunch box which I’m going to eat while I work. Sometimes they come sour but this year, they have been very very sweet. Oranges / mandarins are a typical memory from a lazy and sunny wintry day...people will just take them in baskets for picnic and laze around while eating them. I love oranges and miss them throughout the year since they are a typical winter speciality.

But mandarins grow in your country India? We in here have mostly apples because of cold weather and low sun activity. I thought mandarins is brought to my country at winter because they have been grown in tropical countries right now.

Cool. I have tried to grow a small mandarin tree at home, but it fails to give any fruits because of lack of the sun here :)
