Reading is a skill which most people less prioritize as compared among listening, speaking, and writing. Reading is a skill which elevates someone to success in life especially when he knows how to comprehend and understand what he/she has read. Because studies show that as a fluent and fast reader, one will be able to listen, speak, and write well simply because all these are inter-related. Reading goes with the adage "Fast and sure" not "Slow but sure." After all learning to read will lead us to reading to learn...

I remember writing few articles on speed reading techniques. I also consider reading a very important skill. While you are reading a document you not only have to pay more concentration but also hold that level of concentration for longer. This improves comprehension. However some of us have the habit of looking back every now and then. This slows down the reading speed. As a result when you reach to the end of the text you forget what you've read at the beginning. When you learn a new word, you first listen or read it from somewhere. However, this doesn't mean that this word has become yours. To completely make it yours you need to first use it in your writing and then in your speaking. When you want to learn a certain word be sure that you can use it while speaking. Like you said, listening, speaking, reading and writing are all interrelated. They all play vital role in the learning process.

Hello getbiswa, This was a pretty good response and I liked it. I learnt a few things about reading and I agree on with almost of what you said! I am a pretty good reader, well thats how people think when they observe me. I think, my communication skills have improved a lot over years as the no-of books I read has increase. I am really grateful to the books which are the ones which actually helped me grow confident as a person who can read well, speak well, listen very well and write things pretty well! They all certainly help us emerge strong when we are in a group. Sometimes it does help us take the thumbs up from people whom we even don't know! Cheers! :)

Reading should be combined with speaking and listening because it is all about communication. Whatever you do, you always communicate. And this starts with most of the time with reading. Whether it is reading actual text or book, or trying to read pictures or decipher symbols, it leads to richer communication.

Hello mate, Nice discussion.:) people actually now a days have ignored a lot of reading and find it as a waste of time as there are so many alternatives available for that! For instance, every book, every novel out now-a-days possible has its corresponding audio books available so that people find it better to play it instead of reading it themselves. Reading basically improves the concentration and develops the creative skills in the child when it is practiced with the kid from the early age! Starting with the comics and then into fictions and adventures and then biographies and auto biographies and then philosophies and things like that, not only improve the reading skills, as you said, since reading, writing, listening, all these are pretty the same things which corresponds to the other with one or the other way, will surely help the kid grow to be a person with the perfect knowledge of speech and simultaneously, he starts learning a lot of things in life from the books. Thus, reading is the wonderful thing which is lost its way now-a-days, but I'm sure, many will agree with me on this, There are still people like me in this world, who would even forget the food and water and everything else, just to read and finish the book we have started. Reading just gives me all the happiness and it is the best friend I ever had and can ever have! :) As the saying in kannada goes this way, "Desha Suthi Nodu, Kosha Odhi Nodu" Which means, travel around the world and see, or , read the books. Both means the same. You travel to visualize yourself and sometimes you can't afford to do it. In this case, read the books and you can imagine yourself anywhere and everywhere. It helps you gain the experience of the other person. Like for me, Books are my best friend, which is always with me. No complaints and No demands. Cheers!:)
