Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I know a man of my age who during his student life always sticked to the moral values of life in a very strict way. He was really a man of ideology and was respected by all irrespective of age. Now he holds a very high rank in government administration and is most corrupted. All his past ideology now seems to be swept away by his lust for wealth. How would you explain this change? It reminds me the famous quotation that goes as ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’. Do you agree?

Hi Doctordidi, the problem with most people is that they hate corruption, because they are not the ones receiving the money.
If they receive the money, then they will talk differently.
Most common people hate bribery because they are the givers, not receivers.
If they have a chance to make use of their job or other means to receive compensation or power, most of them will.

Yes, I do. I can't believe how power can really change even the really nice people.
It's just sad, that's why I don't even want Manny Pacquaio in politics... It would've been nice if your friend/classmate remained the same, he would've added t0 the very few good and honest politicians...

I couldn't understand why such a regime would collapse overnight. People say people gain their rights and freedom. But in another country, we can't see a dramatic change, like NK, where people suffer more. In my country's education, I was never told that these countries are dictorial. They were prosperous. I guess I agree with you, cuz I find the reason.

For this , I shall quote "with great power comes great responsibility" - Spiderman.
Lust for wealth .. like you've mentioned , not many people can fight the temptation. Too much of a temptation and most people go the easy way out and stay away from being good , because it's easy being bad. At least that's what I think. A sick theory but that's how the world works. You see , everywhere bad guys win this , bad guys are up .. and up the ladder.
There are many people working their backs off the hardest way possible and they then rise up. But on the other hand , there are also those who curry favors and gets the promotion because they bribe their way and dine their bosses and etc. I'm staying hypothetically though. Perhaps that's why the saying nice guys finish last arise. But at least , it's with integrity and being able to sleep at night with a peace of mind. Another ideology which strikes my mind is that many nice people are being looked upon as bad , because that's just how the world works too. You can't do nice and be nice .. and have lots of connection.
That's not really how I look at it. Therefore , humans have a path to choose .. do bad , be bad and act bad and able to escape hardships and problems .. or go the right way and be criticized perhaps till the end of time? God knows .. being wronged again and again .. but with the sincerest attributes all the time. Even if an act of being nice is being looked upon as just trying to suck up or etc. Phew , look at my answer. I hope I stay in line with this topic. So to answer your forum topic .. absolute power corrupts ? I believe that. And as cliche as it sounds , not all people are like that .. but still .. just makes me think and think. Good topic. Provoked my thoughts there for a moment.

hi doctordidi yes that statement is very true. as they seem tol suddenly fall in love wi themselvs and feel they are above the law.I have seen good people become wealthy and suddenly change like Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. I agree with fellow mylotters there should be term limints in people in government admins. so they do not get swelled heads and
change ingto greedy guts.

I think that alot of people start out very enthusiastic and think they can solve all the ills of the world. When they realize they can't and get into the actual workings of government they get frustrated and many do become corupt just to stay afloat and try to do some part of their job. It is too bad but this is just how government is and has been. I would never want to work in government.

Nope, I would beg to disagree, on the grounds that there are some personages in history whose lives would negate the statement. One example is Corazon Aquino of the Philippines. She had absolute power in her time but she was never corrupted.

Yes, we can say that it may be true to most people especially those occupying higher positions in the government. Many people now become materialistic so if they are given a chance they became greedy.Once you are in power, most likely you will be prone to temptation and that's when corruption gets in.

Yes, I agree to it.
Everyone has to change in order to adopt themselves to the new environment.
If you can't change yourself, then you have to quite, you will not survive and you might be discriminated.
Before, I never believed in it.
Later. I quite my job as an Electrical consultant in construction and I started to believe in it.
Although I am not sure if I have made a wrong move or not, but I still never regret to my decision to quite.

I was a student of political science at my degree level. It is said.."power corrupts and absolute power absolutely" In your case it is power that has corrupted. He has no absolute power being agovernment servant. Not only that people who occupy positions of power talk roughly and do not listen to the other man.It is called 'power kick' as a drunken man gets what is called'kick'.Student life is different from later life.Student life is learning life and official life is earning life.If not in official life can he make money after retirement."make hey while sun shires" is the principle he is following. Not only is he corrupt but he will also justify why he is corrupt if some one dare to ask. That is life...Pl note I am not justifying corruption at any level..

That's why all governments need term limits. Every government position of influence should be limited to two years with no re-election.

I do agree that it does happen and I believe it is mostly because of the environment to which they enter when they get in power. They are exposed to a whole different world and they visualize it as being something they would never become a part of, but when so much of it is around you and sometimes you are treated very unfavorably if you don't go along, people cave in under the pressure of it all.
