My Dr has prescribed a cholesterol lowering drug and now I find out that it can destroy my memory. I'm not taking it any more. I get a daily news letter from Dr Mercola. Dr Mercola has been a guest on Dr Oz's show several times and to me that is a good recommendation. Any way today he had an interview with Dr.Graveline. Dr Dr. Graveline has been an astronaut and has practiced medicine for 23 years of experience. He was prescribed lipitor. "It was six weeks later when I experienced my first episode of what was later diagnosed as transient global amnesia," Dr. Graveline says. "This is an unusual form of amnesia wherein you immediately, without the slightest warning, are unable to formulate new memory and you can no longer communicate. Not because you cannot talk, but you can't remember the last syllable that was spoken to you. So nothing you say is relevant anymore. In addition, you have a retrograde loss of memory, sometimes decades into the past." He goes on to explain what had happened and has gone on to study the problem in depth. MedWatch has received about 80,000 reports of adverse events related to statin drugs, and remember, only an estimated one to 10 percent of side effects are ever reported, so the true scope of statins' adverse effects are still greatly underestimated. With all the problems reported on these drugs I'm not taking any of them any more. If you take a statin drug you may want take look into it better. Here is the report that Dr Graveline gave to Dr Mercola. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/02/12/dr-duane-graveline-on-cholesterol-and-coq10.aspx

There are better cholesterol reducing meds out there. I used to work in health care and we were taught side effects of certain medications. Lipitor is a very strong medicine and it can cause liver failure. The one patient that we had that took it had to go every month and have his liver enzymes checked to make sure his liver was not failing. The doctor put me on a statin called lovastatin. It is supposed to be one of the safer medicines. It is always best to research a medicine and watch patient leaflets. Another thing many people do not know is that grapefruit or grapefruit juice causes an interaction with Lipitor. It is important to read ingredients in foods before buying them because sometimes they have grapefruit extract in them. A popular caffeinated beverage Mountain Dew contains grapefruit extract in it.

That's pretty scary! I just started taking Lipitor two months ago but so far there are no adverse side effects. I tried for years to control my high cholesterol with diet and exercise but it just wasn't working. My numbers for overall cholesterol were over 300! Something had to be done. I didn't watch the video but read the article. I didn't see any advice how to deal with high cholesterol if you don't want to take statins, though. Any ideas?
