Our printer is broken. It keeps saying we need new ink. We replaced all the ink

cartridges. It still says we need to replace them, they're out. My husband asked around and went to where we bought the printer years ago, they said the printer is no more good. Seems like it needs to be programmed to accept the ink cartridges and I think they just want to sell more printers. So reluctantly, my husband bought another printer. This one didn't cost much, (like the other one didn't either), but it's way better. We can do photography level prints. The other one we couldn't. It still just seems like there should have been some kind of fix for the other one. The person we normally donate computers to doesn't want our old printer. That was a surprise. We thought he would know how to fix it and he said he doesn't fix printers. So do you know how to fix a printer that has this problem? Do you have somewhere to donate printers to? What capabilities does your printer have? Our new one is a brother MFC-J615W in the LC61 series. Our privious one was a brother MFC-204C of the LC51 series. My husband just donated the ink from our previous one to the local library, they have our old printer. The new ink for the new printer is way different so we can't just switch them. So have you ever donated something when you could no longer use it?

Oh, yes I sure have. I had several VCR's that didn't work anymore so I donated them. I got a new printer as a part of my warranty subcription to my computer this time. I got the brand new printer right away. Didn't set it up yet. Then I get a letter from the company saying they needed the old printer that this was a replacement for. Uh, huh? So I emailed the representative and haven't heard a word. So irritating.

Interesting, I never had that deal for a printer, turn in one to get another one. I don't think we have anywhere to donate used VCRs, but I will have to check on that. Thanks and take care.

We don't have the first two. We do have a Salvation Army, but they take clothes and food here. Trust me, they have all they can do to keep up with just those two items during this so-called Great Recession.

I don't have a printer to turn in. He sent me one as part of the deal and then I got a letter saying I needed to send the other one back. There is no other one. Second hand store places such as St.Vincent de Paul, Youth Ranch and Salvation Army.

I have three HP printers and they are not that good. One of them would work if I got converter cable but the cable costs a lot. The second one was my husbands and the printer cartridge does not connect properly and the top where the scanner is is lopose. The other one I got when I bought my old computer does not hold that much. So I am planning to give them away. I am going to buy a Canon. We have the Value Village and Goodwill to donate them to. There is always someone who is a techie who can fix things.

I was wondering whether your Goodwill store will accept it? That is where we get rid of our obsolete tech equipment. There is another thing, that you could give it to a recycling place for parts. I have three printers that are in the same condition, but I figure if I just drop it off t our local Value Village and then someone will buy it. The trouble is that HP has not been making good lasting printers since well for a while. Oh we have trouble giving away computers here. They go for parts.t

We don't have a Goodwill store here. I don't know where the nearest one would be. Probably Vermont (the next state over) would be closer than 3 counties away in NY if there is one there.

I can't find anyone who is interested in the printers. We give computers away without any problems, but still looking for someone to donate the printer to.

When something isn't worth fixing I find it so frustrating. Planned obsolescence. I'm glad you found a way to pass on the things that were no longer any use to you. There's normally someone, somewhere, that will find a use for just about anything. I always found Freecycle very useful when I couldn't rehome something myself.

I got sick of Free Cycle, I kept getting threatening legal garbage in may email. I have no intentions of reselling the stuff, but they kept sending threatening reminders. So I told them they could go jump.

Sounds very sensible! I've hard lots of bad things about Freecycle since I stopped using it. I actually contacted them with a view to setting up a group in my new area, but I found the tone of their email in return pretty offensive and decided that I could do without the hassle.

Sad isn't it? In theory, it's an awesome idea that could and does benefit so many. Sorry to hear there's a problem with them where you live, too. Thaqnks and take care.
