Do you ever pick up things from other people? Things that last much longer than the relationship with the other person lasted? I had this co-worker, I think we only worked together about 3 or 4 years. And he ended a lot of his sentences with ... The company I worked for changed a lot of things, and he went to work for another division. Eventually they were spun off, and we lost touch. But I still do the ... thing. Some years later, much to my surprise, I discovered that there was a word for it, ellipsis. Well, no kidding dot dot dot

Hi dawnald Did we meet on another website anytime I always have this thing sticking almost everuwhere... here at mylot, even all the emails since ages... I know it is very wrong but I cannot get this habit away Ok, now for the discussion, yes, there was a word(bhai - this is an Indian word for brother). My friend used this quite often and for everyone around. Soon I too acquired this habit and nearly evry sentence that I spoke had this word - relevant or not - didnt matter. Once while talking with my girlfriend(now my beloved wife), I called her bhai (I neednt say what happened then) and that was the last time I misused that word

Uh oh, well there are worse things you could have called her... I don't know. what other website were you thinking of?

Well sids You called her 'bhai', no problem, but if she addresses you as 'bhai' and comes with a 'Rakhi'; this Rakhipurnima than there will be real problem, so be careful, guard your words while talkind to your dearest wife.. Cheers. God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

Ellipsis, really? I do the dot dot dot thing too, but mine are dot space dot space dot . . . and I think they are practically on all my responses! Let's see . . . my first "real" career job was at a company owned by an Iranian family. Their mom always cooked Iranian (Persian) food for lunch and the dad brought it over. It was my first exposure to that food and I sooooooooooooooooooo loved it - every bit of it. My boss (the son) and I were great friends . . . but that pretty much fizzled after I quit and he admitted to me that he sort of had a crush on me. I know I can still find him, but I just don't. See, I just did the dot space dot space dot thing!!!

I ellipsis often, but spell it badly. It is not to be confused with. . . but will be, none the less. . . elipse, which is the fancy schmancy name they give to the oval at school these days.

So then I find myself wondering about elliptical trainers. . . they do not make me go in an oval, but they are not incomplete thoughts. Perhaps they are training me to have incomplete thoughts.

I knew that was an ellipsis.. learned it in math earlier this year.. it's supposed to represent a continuation. As you can see, I use the dot dot thing frequently too, but I use mine to represent a pause in my discussion, or in the place of paranthesis or something.. I just find it useful I guess. What's difficult is stopping myself from doing it in class reports or discussions!

Well I usually laugh covering my mouth with one hand. And then one day I noticed my ex-boyfriend (we were together then) do the same. LOL. That was really very funny and he couldn't get rid of that habit. I wonder if he still does it. His current girlfriend would be pissed to know where he got that from

I use this form of punctuation all the time. I also discovered there was a name for it recently but I had forgotten it. Thanks for the reminder. Please remind me again in another few weeks.

...and sometimes it means that this goes on....and on. What would we do without and intellect and curiousity, huh? I am so curious. I can't start a show on tv and not watch it all the way to see what happens. I didn't know the name for this. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

Well, I learned something new today...a new word to add to my vocabulary. We can all learn from each other I did not know that there is a word for this, even though I am a frequent user of the three dots in casual e-mails or texts. However, if I am typing a professional e-mail, I avoid the ..., also known as ellipsis.

I used to do that whenever I'm texting. I just figured it's a waste since I can always end my sentences with only one.

Lol, YES! I do that all the time. It's funny, how my speech has become a mashed up mix of all the people I have hung out with over the years. I can't really say most of the things that I've picked up on here because they are not appropriate for all audiences. But, okay, there was this one guy that I worked with that every time he went on a smoke break he would refer to it as something different. It was so funny and some of the terms that he used I use today. Also there are the people that drive you up the WALL with their phrases, but then you end up using them. My littlest sister would response to everything I said with 'I know right?' and so many days I would tell her 'If you say that one more time I will straight up smack you! I'm serious, stop!' I never did end up hitting her for it, but I sure do say that myself now if I don't watch it. My ex used to say that he had to '(pee) like a Russian racehorse.' when we were together. And now I find myself saying that when I have to go REALLY bad. My boyfriend laughs because he thinks it's funny to hear that come out of my mouth when I'm usually pretty girlie about most stuff. But, when I say it he knows it's time to get to the nearest bathroom NOW! Lol

I don't think I really use a lot of ellipsis... If I ever did use it in my discussions... ...then I would think that it was just for dramatic effect. But I don't really see any dramatic effect even in this response either...tsk...tsk...tsk...

I had a friend that always ended his statements with you know what I'm saying. I hated it. I have to admit it didn't take me long and I was doing the same thing. I moved and lost contact with him. Every now and then, I catch myself still saying it. Kind of sad if I don't say so myself. Best Wishes!
