Clinical Trial

I would like to hear what you know about clinical trials. Have any of you been in them? Do you know someone who has? Could you tell me all about your experiences? If you haven't been in a clinical trial, would you consider it? Or are you more wary because they are trials, and not proven to be completely effective yet? I'm in the midst of being accepted into a clinical trial and I'd like to know what others think about them.

Although I have not sought any clinical trials I would not mind doing one for migraines and or unexplained headaches. I have had so many headaches since way back when I was 8 years old and to date nothing ever comes up on testing. There isn't a single day I do not get headaches so I would not mind doing a clinical trial because there have to be more like me. So I think it is a great idea, to try something if it means it may help others.

We're twins! My migraines started when I was eight. I've had a migraine since Saturday and just today is it easing. The pain has been so crippling I hadn't gotten out of my apartment for days. I had to call my dad for him to bring me some things. Sometimes I throw up, but even worse on occasion I lose my sight.

Hey Opal. Thanks for the input. My mom was on topamax for migraines, and it made her really sick. They told me it wasn't a good idea for me to try it because of what it did to her. But after this past week of migraines, I'm thinking no one knows what is really good for me or not.

Hi Opal I have written that one down and will be asking my doctor. I am at a point that I need to try something new because these bad headaches and migraines are so out of control. Thanks for looking out.

I have never been in a clinical trial, nor do i know anyone else who has. I would definitely consider it though if it would truly help me out and the pay was nice. I think the benefit of it would be great also.

Yesterday I was asked to take part in a clinical trial regarding the benefits of Fish Oil and Vitamin D supplements. This is a five year trial where I would take the supplements sent to me for five years and how it affects my health. The medicine they would send looked just like what I am now taking but I could be one of the people who just receive placebos. I have been taking Fish Oil and Vitamin D for years and I am very healthy. I do not want to have to do without the benefits of these supplements for 5 years should I get placebos so I declined.

Hi AmbiePam, sorry I'm a wee bit late in responding but I'm here now.... My dad did some of the experimental or clinical trials a few years ago and said he'd do it again. Sometimes he was paid for it and sometimes not but he did it to help find a cure to his problem which is his heart as well as diabetes. As for myself, I'd be afraid to try something like this because you never know what you're being exposed to will affect you in the later years. BUT, the people who do do this kind of thing are REALLY brave and thanks to them, some cures have been found or needed treatments.

I want to try it because I want to think my quality of life can be better than it is now.

I am in a clinical trial right now to see if adding avistan to the carboplatin/taxol combination will improve quality of life for recurrent ovarian cancer patients. I was assigned to the avistan group so even after the carboplatin/taxol is finished after 6 cycles, the avistan will continue every three weeks as long as my body will tolerate it. I had really looked forward to doing my part to see if it would help. Getting started was a hassle because there were delays all over the place, but not that it has started, all is ok. I don't mind being a guinea pig because if it will help someone else down the road it is worth it.

I applaud you. And I pray that you come out on the other side of this cancer whole and stronger.

I'm sure I will. I just have to keep in mind that things will get better as long as I don't give up. It seems like so many times, when the going gets tough, the wimps give up. Fortunately, I am no wimp!

Hi Amber-Sis! I have never participated in a clinical Trial, although I've thought about it! Anything that can bring in a little extra cash that isn't too dangerous might be fun and interesting! I would like to hear about the one that you might be trying though. As long as you feel comfortable and safe doing it I don't see any problem with it.

I'll e-mail you about it this weekend. I'm having some trouble with my e-mail. I should get another internet provider, but I hate to have to mess with it.

Firstly, Ambie...PEOPLE like ME, need to THANK people like YOU, whom give of themselves for the "betterment" of the rest of us. Without "clinical trials" we would NOT have some of the "tried and tested" Meds available to us and giving us a better quality of life. Thank you. Have I...NO! Would I..YES! Even tho' one can be considered a human guinea pig during these trials, I am prepared to believe that they are highly regulated enough, that all manner of interventions are in place to ensure your welfare and safety....and that you have been thoroughly tested before the trial for the same reasons. Thanks, Ambie, you may be testing a "med" that will improve my life, one day. Take care!

I have not been in a clinical trial but know someone who has for two different things....and they were very successful...one was something to do with diabetes...and his health greatly improved...I can't remember if it was a new med or what......I know he was quite happy with the results and this was through Mayo Clinic.

Thanks to my husband, this is something I'd probably never do, because he is so spastic abut new things, he hate any kind of change, even good change. I would, however, be cautious and pray about it, because though not every trial is a nightmare, some can be. I don't mean to scare you, but like you said, this is something never tested before, the results can be good or bad, and the effects can cause minor or major problems..So if I were you, pray about it, find someone in the church you trust to pray with you and pray for confirmation and peace in doing this. Once you and your prayer partner sense the go-ahead, then I'd go for it..:)

I've never been in a clinical trial, but I think if I had an ailment and felt like I'd try anything to get rid of it, I'd probably join such a trial. This is how they decide whether or not these medicines are effective or not, so not only are you potentially helping yourself, you could help thousands of others who suffer from the same ailments. There may be some risk.. but I think if it were extremely dangerous the doctors would not be at the phase where they're testing it on humans.

I have not personally been in a clinical trial, but have had other family members who have been. When my dad was in the final stages of cancer, he entered one for an experimental treatment. While it didn't (nor was expected to) cure him, it bought him several extra months that he wouldn't have had, and he generally felt good during that time. Also, an uncle entered into a blind clinical trial for a new type of artificial knee. He doesn't know if he received the new type of knee, but of the two that have both been done, that one feels and works much better. If I had a need, and there was an opportunity, I wouldn't hesitate to enter into one. Good luck, and let us know what you choose, ok?
