UPgrading my PC and RAM...what do I need to know?

I have: HP PC with WIndows XP (5 years old) It has 512MB memory with 2 slots and the option for a RAM of 1GB upgrade for the one slot. I have 1 GB of drive with 90% of that free. I want to upgrade the RAM to 1GB. however, not knowing much about it and not wanting to make mistakes, I am thinking I will contact Geek Squad and see how they can help me. I was wondering tho...since I am not to literate about this stuff...can anyone give me advise on what to ask for, or words to say/not say so I don't get hood-winked by them selling me things I dont' need, but dont' know I don't need them? Is there a brand of RAM that is better than the rest, quality and price and longevity wise? And I was thinking of having them do a clean up something or another. I dont' know what that is called but there is probably something they can do to clean the registry and those places I dont know how to deal with but to get the computer running smoothly and cleanly again Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hello coffee break having little experience in hard ware i think it is better to upgrade your RAM more than 1GB, minimum of 2GB would be great. BTW did u mean hard drive by 1GB with 90% free ??? the main things that you have to have knowledge of is the bus speed which is written in MHz. you can get this information during system boot up or in hard ware configuration. you need to try to match speed of motherboard, RAM and CPU because if one differs than it will create a bottle neck. AND if you dont use any kind of grpahics program then i think it would be better if you try increasing your virtual RAM, it might solve the problem of slow processing and may not need to upgrade. BUT it is your call. i personally can not give you proper advice without having proper knowledge of you computer.

My pc is almost 9 years old, and it's so outdated that I cannot do anything on it except browse the internet.
