The electricity department has increased the tariff, so now our monthly bill comes to more than 2000 rupees per month and it is beginning of summer. Earlier they used to charge less if you consume more units; the charge was less after particular number of units. But now it is more.
Hubby talked to the officers, they say, it is done to minimize consumption.
In my home, many times the fans, lights, TV are left on even if there is none in the room.
We don’t have the old conventional filament type bulbs, but all are CFL lamps?
At night too at least one light bulb is left on in each room and the toilets.
My son has assembled a kind of ‘sensor’ and fitted one in the rooms, where none sleeps at night.
As soon as you enter the room, the light controlled by that sensor glows, it senses your movement, so if you remain static, the light gets off again.
Hope it will save some of our money;
we will also try to switch off the appliances that are not in use; though it will take time to give up the effect of years.
What steps you take to save on electric consumption bills?
Do you use CFL lamps?
Please respond and share your views.

That will a good way to save the electricity, by installing such a motion sensor will definitely save you a lot of money. But what know is that the sensor is quite expensive, so if you were to install it in every part of your house, you will need to spend a huge sum of money before you can save money on the electricity. I have install one of the light sensor in my car porch, so, when the sky turning dark, it will turn on and vice versa.

By installing the motion detectors, light sensors, timers and so on can ensure we turn of our light at certain periods.
In fact, all of these devices are consuming electricity too.
Overall, it is still saving our electricity if we have forgotten to turn off our light.

hello kal,
electricity is the biggest that i pay every month.
previously when i still had my ref, i pay P3,500 monthly. it is an old ref, about 10 years old. my mom advised that i discard it and change with a new one. i followed her advise, discarded the ref but i have not bought a new one yet. my bill became P1,200 for two months. what a saving!
but it is summer and it is so hot even if it rains at night. i bought two electric fans and now i get to pay around P1,600 monthly.
the transport fare have risen and next thing.. all the other things will follow. this will include energy.. so i dont think there is anything new around here.
thank u for your beautiful discussion.

That was a very good idea. I live by myself so I don't use alot in the first place..and many times since I am in the upstairs for most of the day or night...I don't always have tv on either! So I am pretty conservative when it comes to using the electricity.

Here because of summer we couldn't turn off the Fan. But our electricity department itself cut the power 2 or 3 hours. So the electricity bill is same as the before days.

HI Kalyni well I guess thats one thing I can be thankful for no
longer having to pay the outlandishly high power bills. we did
switch to those CFL lamps as it did cut down a bit on our light
bill.We also turned off all light in the rooms of our apartment thate we were not using. That sensor sure a smart idea. good luck in cutting'back seems to me like the cost of electricity is pretty high globablly so we used to try not to leave lights burning when we were not in the rooms.
I imagine our high rent and board is partly due to the cost of the utility bills here at G old crest. I am only glad I do not have to pay a power bill anymore. lol lol,

I tried installing LED ( light emitting diodes)PIR (passive infrared) sensors which is powered by chargeable AAA batteries and attached by magnets that I in turn charge using a solar battery charger and inverter, it saves electricity but would require extra work, LED is not as bright as CFL so I put it in places where you do not need bright light or need it only to turn on automatically when you are there, so the use is quite limited, yeah it saves power but you also have to spend some money.

Everything has been going up here too and that includes the electricity bill! I am trying to set my air conditioner to save money. I limit my laundry by trying to wash and dry and conserve. I also try to keep my lights out more and I limit my dishwasher to only once a day - if at all.

dear maa,
I keep trying to save electricity usage but no avail.
it seems that it only lowers for a hundred pesos.
So,after months of trying to save ,i stopped and back to the usual usage without control and the charges is almost the same..so why save (hehehe)
Computers are always in use since my kids has their own pc's and we have router at home to share internet connections to each computers and so with the PS3 when kids play games online.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY again maa' and blessings

There are many type of sensors and controllers to monitor our electrical appliances.
For instance, there are motion detectors with passive infra red sensor, timer controller, light sensors and so on to work as automatic switching system for us.
However, all of these devices are consuming electricity no matter your electrical appliances are in off or on mode.
About the energy saving bulbs or the electronics bulbs, they can save our electricity bill a lot by comparing to the conventional bulbs.
When we use these energy saving bulbs, we should concern the radiation too.
Below is one of the useful link for your reference:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/energy-saving-light-bulbs-can-emit-enough-uv-radiation-to-damage-skin-956696.html
In my point of views, we should turn off all of our electrical appliances with unplugging the electrical cords from the electrical sockets when we are not using them.
By doing so, we can save a bit more in terms of loss of energy.

In Nigeria where I live, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria ( PHCN ) which is the general provider of electricity in Nigeria does not provide regular electricity. Electricity comes in and last for 3 or 4 hours and then it goes off. Thus, since elecricity is not regular, it helps to save we consumer from paying excess bills. However, there are times some of the staff of the company want to manipulate figure in order to cheat unknowing consumer. So I save elecricity bills by the natural action of the power provider. By this I only pay for the few hours I use electricity.
