I was surprised to listen from my daughter when I asked her to study during her exam of general knowledge and moral education... She said that teachers st her school do not give any importance to these two subjects.. she told me that notes are not given in these two subjects and teachers give A GRADE to every student.... That was too strange and i felt that these two are also immensely important as in the competitive exams they will be naturally asked about current updates and moral education is important so that they can learn good manners and values... Don't you people think that this is very wrong????

Hi eshaan, you are a caring mom and always pay close attention to your kids school lessons. Actually how good the general knowledge and moral could hardly judged accurately by the marks kids have acquired from the exam I suppose. You know not all the kids have high scores in their moral education exams show that they perform very well in their respective behavior in all aspects. And general knowledge is vast and endless and kids acquire this from their daily life like reading, watching, participating, etc other than from the class. So I don't think it is not appropriate to judge by exam.
I think grade from A to C given to kids according certain extend is okay. And their class teacher could do this by observing them every now and then in school.
may be all the students in the same class behave very well therefore all of them have got the highest score. Saying about the general knowledge I suppose it would be rather fair if a student can answer 80% or above of the written questions, similar to that of competition is deserved to gain an A grade
Happy posting and have a nice day

Hi ikbooi, nice to have your response... you are very right to say that general knowledge can be gained by reading books, participating etc. , and my daughter is already fond of reading newspapers, she also enjoys by taking online quizzes etc. but for at least moral science, parents always don't get time for teaching them moral values but still whenever i get time i tell them some manners etc.
Well i think parents can give them values better than teachers...
thanks for your response

Really happy to read your rapid comment here
Yeah, it's very interesting for me to watch kids participating in live quizzes on tv screen. They are so smart and peppy as well as they are so serious and concentrated doing their best in the live performance. Your two kids are fortunate enough to have such a caring and considerate mom like you
It's true that parents play the more important roles in kids life as they are the people who spend majority of the time together with their kids.
You are very much welcome eshaan. It's my great pleasure to join in the topics of friends who always support me

I think this one is very bad and you need to take up with other parents and have discussion about it. Also as a group you need to talk with the School authorities. Also make a point that this is not right for the good future of the kids who are studying there.

I had complained several times to the school principal but o actions were taken for this matter.... As i could not do anything, i had changed her school and the school in which she is admitted now is a very reputed school but in this school there is no such subject as general knowledge but still moral science is there and it is taught wisely......

Hi Eshaan,
I live in the US and to my knowledge there are no classes here taught on morals, values etc. I think that for the younger kids, some teachers may talk about such things but mostly, it is left up to the parents to teach those things and we all know how that can go. I have always thought it would be good to have a class just for those things or at least the basics.

Glad to know you are from US and it is good that these things are left to parents.. I agree to it but at least if teachers are not supposed to teach them these subjects school should not keep them as subjects... If it is like that only they should not show off and everything should be fully left on parents....

Moral Education and GK must form essential parts of education. Moral Education in our day turned about to be Bible Study in Christian Missionary run schools and in aided Government Schools there was no such subject at all. This was left to the families to impart. My daughter is in a Hindu Family run school[Bangalore]. Since it is not an aided school she keeps getting to learn moral lessons as exemplified by ISKCON. The school authorities have outsourced this job to ISKCON. As I said in our day [1963-72] my school[one in , Hyderabad-AP] skirted the issue and even though they had just started Bhagavad Gita Classes, they had stopped just after a few sessions, for they "heard" from the Education Department that no religious education should be given as there would be students from all religions and India is a secular, socialist, democratic republic! Hence a little immorality is tolerable!
Years later as the country progressed towards free market economy, I find that several schools could be opened by private entrepreneurs, with greater freedom than afforded by the strait-jacketed government rules! So, I feel happy that my daughter is placed in a better situation than I was. I had to pick up a "secular" outlook from my school and develop my religious knowledge only from home. Thanks to my rich learning from Grandpa and other family members, I did not miss out on my religious education.
In our day GK was a private effort. My daughter's school gives regular inputs via what are called as regular issues of gaptopedia books. They do take an interest by even grading them on real and seriously conducted tests. I have attended several of my daughter's Annual Day functions and they are a treat to watch. I was reminded of my school insofar as inculcating a secular, multicultural, multi-linguistic democratic outlook in children. Only that today there is a great help from technology.
But this question remains: Couldn't there be moral education without alluding to some religion?

Yes, this is right that your daughter is getting good education including the subjects moral science and general knowledge... because moral values are to be taught to every children then only our country can progress further...Schools play a major role in making the children to a person of high moral character in future....

Then they are just wasting their time, and fooling themselves!
If these things are not given importance in school, then why have them in the first place. They should spend the time learning something else! Instead of having these as tokens, so just they could say that they do.
I don't think it's carelessness, I think it's just indifference.

Yes, moral education and general knowledge should be given importance in high school level. More youth nowadays are disrespectful to elders and other people. Most of them do not even behave properly inside their classrooms. i have observed that whenever i go to the school of my daughter during school activities, the teachers find it hard to make them listen and cooperate. Usually, teachers have to shout at them first before they pay attention. Some of them are rude and bad words are their common language.
It is true that parents are the first teachers but our children stays longer in the school than in the home and they tend to be influenced by their classmates who do not behave well. Therefore, teachers should still continue to instill in them good manners and proper values.

Same is with my daughter's school... She herself told me that many of her friends do annoying activities at school, they disturb teachers and do not respect them... they even make a lot of noise during classes and even bunk important classes though they are children of seventh grade...
HAPPY POSTING
