More of the same to come...

I called the study coordinator to find out what the plan was on my treatment and found out that I will be continuing to receive the infusions at the hospital and that they will be administered over the same amount of time as this last time. The only difference is that they will send me to Women's and Children's Hospital instead of the University Hospital where I was this time. I like that one a lot better and it is where my doctor works out of when she isn't at Ellis. I will be going for my labs still at Ellis, but they aren't open long enough to take care of the extended treatments. I just hope that things are more coordinated than they were this time. I was told that they would call them a week beforehand and let them know that I would be there so that maybe I could get started first thing in the morning and be able to go home at a decent time. This time it was around noon before they actually got started because they didn't tell them until after 8 that I was even coming. Oh well...

I certainly hope that your future treatments will not be as bad as the first treatment that you've received. If there is one thing that I've learned through going through the experience of being a caretaker of someone that is going through chemotherapy, it is that you have got to be your own healthcare advocate. In this situation, it means that you have to make sure that they know to expect you and to have your medications preordered while it may mean other things to other people. I only wish that you could have your labs drawn at the same place as where you are getting your infusions.

The first time they told me I was being sent to Women's and Children's Hospital, I really dreaded it because the only one I had been in before was the University Hospital and I thought that was the best. But when I saw how much better the facilities were I decided that maybe maybe that one was better. The study coordinator apparently doesn't think much about the SEU (symptoms evaluation unit) which is where most patients from the cancer center go instead of going to an emergency room, but for some reason, gyn/onc patients always go to the other place. Since that is where my doctor works out of and that is where the on-call gyn/onc resident is, that is where they tell me to call if I have problems outside of clinic hours. I think it will be good to have everything done in one place.

It is good that you can actually talk to someone. I do hope they follow through.I know it is a long day, but I like to start my day a little earlier than noon. I hope it all works out for you.

I'm glad that she was able to call me back today and fill me in on what is going on. She says they didn't realize that it would take so long or they would have scheduled the treatment at the hospital to start with. I'm sure that it will work out. Thanks for the response!

I'm sure that it will work out better this time because they know how long it will take and they are planning it right instead of making a decision to make a change on the day of treatment. Thanks for the comment.

Hi daeckardt Does seem to be a better option because it is the same hospital where your doctor works at. In case there are any questions and or concerns he can be easily reached. I also like that it will be earlier where as you will not have to go through what you did the last time. Sounds like good follow up going on.

Thanks for the response. I agree that it is a better option. She will be at the cancer center that day, but she may also be at the hospital later on. I think on the other days she does surgeries at the hospital and there are other gyn/onc residents at that hospital even if she isn't there so it is a lot better set up. I like the rooms at that hospital better also. They are all private rooms instead of doubles. Much more comfortable.
