The 32-bit and the 64-bit are technical terms and for easy understanding they mean - how fast the data and instructions can be sent across to the different parts of the computer.
The technicalities including how can you find what bit is your computer can be found here-

Note: The softwares have issues if you install wrong operating system. So please confirm what type / configuration your system is.

32-bit and 64-bit relate to the size of the data bus and whether your processor is capable of processing 32 bit instructions (8 bytes) at a time or 64 bits (16 bytes). If you don't know, then you should install the 32-bit version.
Most software is still 32-bit and you will see very little advantage in installing the 64-bit upgrade (in fact, the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer has been shown to be slower, even on a machine which is capable of 64-bit.)

even i dont know the difference between 32 and 64 bits. But i know that 64bits are much faster than 32. Mostly people has 32 bit computers. I guess u too have a 32bit processor. So go for 32 bit. Plz prove ur hardware detail of m.board and processor , so that readers can help u.

Hi Siliguri,
windows Xp 64 bit is the advance version of the XP OS.. since now high end microprocessor are introduced in the market so in order to support them and to make it able to run all the new programs designed specially for the 64bit processor the company has introduced 64 bit version.. hter r other OS version which support 64 bit format like vista ultimate and windows 7.. so y r they providing it for XP..?? this question might come to ur mind .. so here's the answer because of the popularity of XP people find it more of their type and they feel comfortable to work on XP instead to switch to a newer version .. so Microsoft has provided an option for the XP users to use the new advance featured and high definition programs on the very same XP environment.. so thats y windows has announced XP-64 bit..
if u upgrade to 64 bit many of the 32bit software will not work on it u hav to dwnlod the 64 bit veroin of them..
so if u had a 64 bit processor and want to run high end software like some of the animation s/w and the high defination games then go for the XP 64 bit version .. and if u r not that addicted to XP then go for Vista ultimate or windows 7..:)
