Pasig River. A river that had been the main source livelihood and transportation in our town for the last 500 years as of now is one of the most polluted and uninhabited rivers in the world and the biggest reason behind is the very people that it had served through the years.
The indiscriminate throwing of trash and human wastes on the river has caused it to be severely polluted, one of the factors which brings this problem about are the informal settlers or slum area that resides along the riverbanks that the Government should have made sure to avoid in the first place.
And also one is that the citizens and the Government has no political will to make sure that the river is safe against people that are conveniently defiling the once beautiful river, so note to self never ever throw trash along any man made or natural water paths to avoid this disaster in the future, we can do more.

Yes, government should be responsible in educating its people, not to pollute the river that has fed citizens for many centuries. If education doesn't work, it's about time to incoporate punishment to let them learn. Your government should take action before it's too late because the possibility of river become a canal, is there. If government are standing by doing nothing, then it's for the volunteers to start it off. Slowly encouraging others to follow suit.

Fortunately, through the efforts of ABS-CBN Foundation's Bantay Kalikasan, there have been efforts to rehabilitate the Pasig River. And you're right, we have to start with the grassroots. Aside from cleaning the trash in the river, BK started helping the communities living beside the Pasig River. They started relocating the residents near the estero de paco because they too believe that it doesn't stop at cleaning the river. We should also provide the community with better living so that they would not reside near the river and pollute it. Now, through the efforts of BK, former residents of estero de paco are now relocated in Bayanijuan village in Calauan. They were given their own homes and were provided with livelihood to sustain their living. The good news is, this is just the beginning. More efforts will come for the resurrection of a once beautiful river.
