Would you give the real zip code to a retailer?

I don't understand, when I check out the items from a retail stores, it doesn't matter it is from Best Buy, Kohl, or other stores, some of them might ask you zip code or something like that. Would this be the purpose of sending your advertisement on good deal around the area?
I heard some people say that, that is not true. These stores might do data mining, and they will use your zip code, and your shopping habits and all other information, and sell them to other marketing companies. So those marketing companies will send you and your area neighborhood a bunch of those junk mails. What an invasion of privacy. So, since then, I never give my real zip code to them. What do you think of it?

I get that they are doing survey kind of things to see where their customers are coming from, how far away, etc....but I really hate that when they ask me. It is done is such a rude way, that it just irritates me to no end. Sometimes I will tell them, other times, I just say I don't know and then get a laugh when I see the look on their face! I mean, I know they have reasons for doing this, but still....it just needles away at your personal privacy and all. FIrst it is the zip code, then it will be your phone number...I take that back...already somethings it it your phone number and what's next? Just price your items/products reasonable and you'll get customers. Its when you are greedy and price things high and people stop buying that you need to be more concerned. Not where they are coming from, but why aren't they coming at all!?!?!!??!

I don't like it when they ask, but I don't see an issue with giving it out. I would rather do that than to give my address or phone number. If they ask for phone number, I never give the number at home. I do not like to give out personal information, but your zip code really isn't private information.

I have never had them ask me for my zip code before but some of them ask for a phone number. When they punch that in, it brings up my name. I don't know why they want the zip code other than data analysis of sales from that area.

Fortunately, we don't get asked that here. However, when I go ONLINE to view store flyers, some of them do ask for postal codes. I feel I have to give out a real one, so as to get the correct flyer info, in case the store branches have different promotions running. I don't think they'd go out and sell such info to marketing companies, though. Rather, it's more for the store's own benefit, i.e. to find out what products their customers look for.

I don't care about giving them my zip code, I don't think they're gonna use it to track me down. Credit card information is so much more dangerous. Now if they asked for a social security number I would be concerned. Even your birth day is a worse thing to give out than a zip code.
I guess by giving someone else's zip code you are contributing to an increase in that area's junk mail? On their behalf, "Thank's alot".
