The Caste System in Present Day India

I have never been to India (but I would love to go). I am not a Hindu but find it a fascinating religion. I am curious about the caste system and how it operates in present day India. How difficult is life for a lower caste person? What about untouchables or non-castes? I am especially targeting this question to Indians who are Hindus. If you are Indian and Hindu, what caste are you? And how does the caste system affect you and your life? I realize that India is a huge and diverse country. And that I might get different answers from someone who lives in a village in one state and a completely different answer from someone who lives in a large city elsewhere.

True. India is a vast country. Its population exceeds 120 crore. It has thousands of languages spoken and written. The caste system which was prevalent widely is no longer widely affecting life. Scheduled caste and tribes are given special concessions in school/college admissions and also in job opportunities and promotions. People of SC and ST are well off and sometimes forward caste people tend to think that more than what is required is pumped to them. I belong to forward caste. Among forward caste also lakhs of people are living below normal living conditions and there is no scope for helping them. we will have more views. we will see.

Thank you for the info. It is very interesting, informative and complicated. I hope to be able to get to India someday but I have a problem with hot weather and crowded conditions. Nevertheless ..... I love to travel and learn. I have many friends who go to India. Most of them are new agers looking for spiritual fulfillment.

Yes. I suggest with some purpose. you must study/research and also travel. Simply travelling means it will cost more and your pocket must be able to help you. India with 120 crore is a growing country. Problem we face is corruption at higher levels. corruption in all departments of life. Still some departments likes banks function without corruption. You must have seen 2g scam. pl see wikipedia link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2G_spectrum_scam It has both plus and minus. Plus is more. I like my native country. if u have any special doubts please ask. I will clarify. I will also send links to help u develop a library of your own. Where are you residing now? I am in Indiana, USA.

I am an Engineer, 62, now living in a village to serve the rural community which is mostly deprived of even the most basic facilities of life like clean water, electricity, health services, education, justice etc. I would like to quench your quest on caste system in India. There are hundreds of castes in India, and since marriages are arranged within castes only, each one remains a separate partition within a society. There used to be untouchables in the country but Mahatma Gandhi worked hard to change their lot and feelings of others about them. The system of untouchables is fading gradually. Reservation policies of the governments in education and government employment also helped in bringing power to the earlier down-trodden classes. At many places, they have become the bosses. I belong to a Hindu family of upper caste - Vaish, the community that traditionally runs economy of the society through trading activity. My father was a staunch Gandhian and so my family does not have ill feelings about lower castes. For my studies of religions and spirituality, I have become a well determined atheist. In-spite of government and people's support to the earlier down-trodden classes, they are not taking enough interest in changing their lot and have become too much dependent on government aids to them. Most of them still don't send their children to schools, don't live cleanly, and don't work hard, just because government provides them a lot to survive. For this reason, they maintain their lower economical status to remain always on the list of weaker sections and keep on getting free aids from the government and the society.

Thank you for your information. Very informative and interesting. I am certain that you are aware that the caste system was brought to India by Aryans from Northern Europe and it was imposed for the benefit of those Europeans. In the United States, we had slavery and segregation. That has haunted us through the centuries. We have a welfare system that that presents a lot of problems similar to what you write about the present situation in India.
