Best way to fix a snap button?

I got this adorable jean skirt for my girls from a rummage sale. My middle wore it 2x and when i took it out of the washer the back part of the snap fell off. I'm not sure what the best way to fix this would be. I don't have a very fancy nor heavy duty sewing machine. Pondering sewing it together by hand provided I have a needle that can handle jean. I was thinking a safety pin but how long would that last or be comfortable or not be a safety hazzard if it poked her if she played with it.

remove it and add a new or a regular button.
once a snap button breaks, that's usually it for it.they never truely go back on right.

I like the idea that the other people gave about taking out both sides of the snap and putting a button hole and button in it's place. However, I also know that they sell snaps at the craft stores that can be put in in a similar manner to using grommets, only you would use a hammer instead of a grommet maker. This would be pretty inexpensive as well. Make sure to let us know how you decide to fix up the skirt.

I am no seamstress but can't be of much help, but I found this link that may go along with your first responder's suggestion of going to walmart and getting a kit.

When my snaps broke on jean, I would get me husband to take out the rest of the snaps. Sew a button on and make a button hole on the other side. You will need stitch around the button hole.

I do like Nadine above, I will usually put in a regular button and create a hole on the other side and sew around it with the sewing machine so the button secures perfectly.

You can get a simple repair for it from Walmart or other store-if there is a Tandy where you are, they have it. It's sets of snaps with a contraption you place on the top and pound it with a hammer to set the snap. Last time I bought it I think it was about $2 but it came with 10 snaps and the tool to set them with.
If you can't find that, how about sewing some Velcro on it?
