Severe Swimming Miscalculation!

Today my boyfriend, his son, and I went to the pool. It was my first time this Summer. We were going to go to the river for a float trip, but then we found out the river was flooded and that didn't seem very safe to us, so instead we chose a public pool a few cities south of us to spend the day. I had bought some sunscreen for the float trip, but when we decided to go to the pool instead I looked at myself and thought I had a pretty good base tan and since we wouldn't be in the pool as long as if we were on a float trip I figured I could forgo the sunscreen. My boyfriend also decided to forgo the Sunscreen because he is naturally darker and even if he does burn it turns into a tan the next day. We sprayed down his son with 50 SPF and now we are realizing we should have sprayed ourselves down too! I don't think mine is nearly as bad as his is, though. I put some Aloe Vera gel on it and it didn't help much. I have to bring the gel to him tomorrow though. Do you ever do this? Think that you are good in the tanning department? For you is there a difference between going on a float trip and going to the pool as to how much Sun exposure you generally get? What do you do if you want to protect from burns but are hoping to get a tan while swimming?

I never wear sunscreen. I don't spend a whole lot of time out in the sun, but when I do I burn easily. I don't usually plan on spending time in the sun, so I just don't think about it.

I think that was my problem. I figured because we went to the pool I wouldn't be out as long as if we went to the river. I was prepared, I just didn't prepare. Lol I'm wondering if maybe the chlorine in the pool also makes you more susceptible to sunburn?

Well here in our country people want to get as fair as they can get. So if I were in your place I'd probably whip up as much sunscreen I can get. I think cold water will help you out to sooth your skin and also if you are peeling cold water makes it faster and less painful. :)

Thank you for the advice! I have been putting on lots of aloe gel yesterday and today. And I took a cold shower this morning which felt good. I think I will take another tomorrow morning and hopefully this will be over before I know it!

You're welcome. I have experienced getting sunburned in the face one time and I know it's not easy.So I am really wishing you well.
