I saw a hawk - again...

I was going over for a freecycle pick up, and I heard this bird overhead. I looked around, because it sounded much like the "cat" cry I hear from time to time. It sounded like a mockingbird, but I looked as hard as I could in the trees, I didn't see the bird. Looking around, I didn't see a cat either. So, I start looking for the bird again. And I spotted him - or her as the case maybe. Sitting (or standing, hard to tell from underneath) on top of a utility pole was the hawk. It looked like the other hawks I've seen this last year, kind of a yellow tan color, not too big, but not real small. After I spotted him, he took off and FINALLY I saw the mockingbird! The mockingbird took off from a nearby wire and chased after the hawk - I know, sounds dangerous, but that's what they do, kind of alert other animals to danger when they perceive it. Still, I think its really cool when I see one, after all, I live in one of the largest 15 cities in the U.S. You see any wildlife where you live?

We don't get much wildlife here but there is a sparrow hawk that comes around now and then. I used to feed the birds near the kitchen window and he (or she) discovered a way to get a quick meal, so I don't do that any more. When we first moved in here a few years ago, we had wild rabbits, but no more. Squirrels, yes. Anyone want some squirrels? They're pests around here.

I don't have food trees for them, either, except an apple tree in the back. They like the birdseed, though - at least the sunflower seeds. I need a few cats around! :)

the cats think they are GREAT entertainment! we have a few, but they don't come around too much because we don't have a lot of "food" trees in the yard

Hi there ElicBxn The only wildlife I see around where I live is the neighbours cat coming into my garden. I did once see a hedgehog in my garden and also a frog but that was over a year ago now so no, I haven't really seen any wildlife where I live recently!!

We see lots, but even down in LA we saw a fair amount. yep those mockingbirds are tenacious. I've seen them go after hawks, crows, people, cats, dogs, etc. One very sorry mockingbird went after my cat, Fluff, when she was in her prime, and ticked her off. Fluff caught the bird in the air and made short work of it.

I live in the 14th largest city in the U.S. and I'm seeing this stuff! Actually more now than when it was much smaller, in part because they don't have as much wilderness as they used to... However, except for a few chickens, I don't see too many domestic farm animals... zoning laws...

Beside the normal type flying birds I have not seen any other types of unusual and or wildlife flying types of birds. I did have a possum in our garden one year. I was scared out of my wits as I had no idea it was an possum. I thought it was a giant rat. So I scream from the top of my lungs and neighbor came out and explained. I immediately went online to check it out and he was right, as it look like the twin online, lol.. My neighbor picked it up and put it in the alley so it can run free. I of course watched from the inside of my house. lol

I've seen those off and on since I moved here, and now we have a cardinal pair living around the house, but hawks, those are pretty near the top of the predator list, so they are much fewer and further between!

geckos sing? I didn't know that... our geckos don't... got loads of insects, birds and other stuff, but I've never heard a lizard sing... I do live in a large city, and probably why you've never seen a mockingbird is that they aren't native to the Philippines... A long time ago I used to have a boa... yeah, the snake kind of boa not the feather kind of one...

no, no not literally sing, i mean their sound, but i don't like them, i don't like lizards they're freaky like little crocs. Ew, they're endangered now many are killing gecko's selling them because some fraud said it can cure AIDS/HIV but they said it's not true, I saw in the net someone is buying 500g of geckos worth 60M pesos. Our national department were stopping them.

I saw a fox yesterday, in broad daylight less than 10 klms from the nearby town. We see roos, right here in our little village and lots of galahs, cockatoos and grass parrots. There was a butcher bird on my front porch the other day. Sometimes I will see an eagle feeding off some road kill...sometimes there is a pair of them. Shortly after I first arrives here, I saw a really tall crane ahead of me on the road. He flew off as I approached and when I got to where he had been, he was about 20 metres away in the field where he landed. That was pretty spectacular. We see kookaburras too but we mostly hear them.

The wildlife here in my little city is mostly birds but one time I saw a possum in the alley. Occasionally a hawk will perch on my fence, and then there are the feral kittens and cats..crows, too. When I drive to my dad's through the country roads I see deer, groundhogs and the occasional snake. I look forward to those drives!

I really don't see too many critters on the ground, but I don't get on back roads either and its pretty much city all the way from the house to the roomie's folks while they are right behind a walmart, they are on like a little country lane...

Your story kinda reminds me about a Peregrin falcon, a pretty famous Peregrin falcon, at least if you lived in Baltimore in the early 70's. I was working on the 28th floor of this 33 floor high rise in downtown Baltimore. The news had several stories about a Peregrin falcon who had taken up residence on the 32nd floor of this building. I never seemed to have the time to go up the few floors to see it until I "met" this magnificant bird, uh, face to face. I was standing in my boss's office, looking out her window (what a view from 28 floors!) when I noticed a HUGE bird flying around. As I watched, the bird got closer and closer until she finally flew to the ledge outside the window I was looking out. She began pacing back and forth, watching me. I felt like I was the one being watched, not her! LOL Anyway, after that, I HAD to go up to the 32nd floor to see her nest. Yep, she had a nest made just for her and her brood. The chicks had moved on to better building ledges ( I imagine) but it was kinda creepy looking at this nest. It was full of tiny bones and lots of feathers. The bones were, obviously, from food they had been gathering and eating, probably some rat bones and lots of smaller bird bones. I never did see this bird, affectionately named Scarlett, on her nest but I'll never forget watching her flying, soaring and diving in the air, then making a special landing just to meet me. That was SO COOL!!! This, of course, was in the middle of Baltimore City, a pretty large city itself. Now, I live in the country and see all kinds of wildlife, almost on a daily basis. The last thing I saw was a rabbit but I've seen deer, opossums, rabbits, groundhogs, gophers, moles, voles, field mice, a blue heron, lots of hawks and, oh right, vultures (ugh, they are SO UGLY!). I have geese here daily because of the lake but occasionally there are ducks. Oh, turtles and snakes, too! I'm sure I've forgotten some but you get the picture. Oh, I did see a mockingbird myself just today. My son has conjunctivitis and I brought him some eye drops and, while standing outside talking to him, we saw the mockingbird. They are gutsy little birds, aren't they!

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember something about this story. I was in college and there was talk about seeing if they could introduce Peregrins in the cities, because they would access the ledges for nests and prey on those rats with wings (pigeons) that are basically vermin in big cities.

I just found a Youtube video of two Peregrin chicks from the USF&G building in downtown Baltimore (where I worked), which is where the original "Scarlett" first made her appearance. Apparently, Peregrin falcons have been nesting there ever since then. This video was taken in 2008 of some newer chicks. Their feet are ENORMOUS! I remember Scarlett's being about as big as my hands. She stood about two or two and a half feet tall. Here's the video if you'd like to see them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNSB2PD_qkE [NOT a referral link!]

Oh yes...I have two very large hawks that live in the field behind my house. I actually have to keep a close eye on my dogs during the day because of them. There is also a pretty big owl that lives down there too. Last year we sit on the back porch in the evening and watched for a family of foxes to come out. They were neat. There are also rabbits galore which make it a little tough to do a small veggie garden..lol.

Wow, that is so cool. I have never seen a hawk out in the city before. I guess I would be worried if I had a cat or dog because the hawk might want to capture it for food. I have seen a wild coyote walking around the oil refinery close to where I live. He saw me and just walked away. I thought he was going to attack me. lol. The other wild life I have seen are raccoons, skunks, crows, and sea gulls.

These were pretty small hawks, only a kitten would be in danger - I saw the first one going after a pigeon... I saw a coyote near where the roomie used to work, when they moved they had TONS of deer out there!

I have always lived where there was wildlife...except for my time in SLC. Back home we had a plethora of wildlife...bears, deer, eagles, ravens, squirrels and porcupines a plenty. Here in Oregon we have a ton of deer...and I do mean a ton! Not a week passes but we see at least one deer in the area. I don't really think I could live anywhere where I didn't see wildlife on a regular basis. I just would not be happy.

We get deer, squirrels, foxes, quail, doves, jays & other birds, occasionally a bear or mountain lion. I think it's amazing you got to see hawks! We see them every once in awhile, but not terribly often. I think it's wonderful to live in an area where we get to see wildlife.

We see lots of birds - mocking birds, barn swallows, cardinals, wrens, lots of grackles and doves. There are others, but I'm not good at identifying birds. Other years, we have seen raccoons, possoms, skunks, and foxes. However, this dry year, we've only seen a skinny rabbit and a rat. Oh yes, we see gekos and other lizards. Going down FM 1518 toward Selma, I occassionally see guineas, peacocks and lots of roadkill. Above the roadkill, I usually see buzzards. Sometimes they are still having their lunch and object to yielding the right of way.

donno that I'd know a swallow, but I see a lot of the others, don't see too many wild critters because there are so many fenced yards, and if the critter can get out so can most pets... but possoms are one we see!
