The Independent arcade games

I almost always see what type of games the independent makers have put up when I get online. Some of them are very well done, The Dishwasher being the best example I think. My question is how many of you have looked into actually making your own games on there? I keep debating about it because I have ideas but I see so many top down style shooters and Mario type games that I am curious if that is how closed the extent of creation is in the programming they provide or if that is just how close minded the people making the games actually are.
