Fake profile/account on FB.

Hi all! One of my friend’s sister has a Facebook account. Lately someone created her fake account and posted her picture too on the account. He or she (the imposter) added all her friends in his/her list. Thereafter, he or she posted nasty and unpleasant comments on those friends’ pictures. Consequently, she started receiving phone calls and messages about her silly comments from her friends (which otherwise she would not have done). Then only she came to know that someone has created her fake profile on FB. She felt very disturbed and lost her peace of mind. My questions are – Has it ever happened to you that someone created your fake profile on FB? If yes, please narrate your experiences. What could one do to prevent such occurrence? If by chance someone creates a fake FB account could it come to knowledge of the genuine FB account holder? Can the matter be reported to FB authorities about it and/or to delete the fake account? Can any legal action be taken against the imposter, if one happens to find him/her out? Please share your knowledge and experiences with us.

I think someone close to your friend's sister may have created that fake account. Unless that person would not have known the phone numbers and other details of her. That person may have some personal problem with her as a result the person is trying to disturb her by posting those things. This matter can be reported to the facebook team , and you should suggest her to do that. This type of incidents happen to women more than men. To prevent such incidents I will suggest not give your contact details such as mobile numbers, email address in public view. Also do not accept friend request from any 'fishy' facebook friends.

Oh no, that was very bad. I didn't join FB but I guess there would be a section where you can report someone who is abusing your friend's sister account. Unfortunately, hat kind of thing is easy to do these days...

Yeah, you are right, reporting is one of the best options, however it takes time for actual deletion of the account. Thanks for dropping in.

I haven't had this happen to me before on FB. I have heard of others who have set up another account so a relative doesn't see certain things on the one they see. I don't think there is much you can do to prevent such a thing from happening. Anyone can steal your pictures and unless you have your options on private they can read your personal information as well.

It is really scary that anyone can steal our pictures and can misuse it.

HI Dpk! I am really sure that the FB admin will delete the fake account if she inform it to the admin. I don't think you will know that someone make a fake account about you unless someone inform you about it.Even if I haven't encountered such problem but I do believe that she can take a legal action against the impostor as he/she already abuse and misuse the site and others personal info without the owner permission.(^^)

Hello friend! We call that person a poseur and yes it can be reported to FB authorities and such account will be blocked. A friend of mine had the same problem a few months ago and she was surprised that her pictures were posted as well. It appeared that the person acting as her stole her fb photos. That's why my private mode in fb is really turned on and i don't accept friends without knowing them first. I usually don't accept invitations easily.

Hello Toni! Many thanks for kick starting the discussion and enlightening me that such a person is called poseur. I also believe that reporting the matter to FB authorities is the best option. You are wiser as you do not accept any unknown friends.

I agree on not accepting unknown friends. My FB privacy mode is on including my friends pictures!

Wow, what a terrible ordeal! I guess she would have been very upset. I would as well. I always wonder what motivates people do this and wonder what kind of people they are. I guess she would lose her peace of mind! It such a violation to ones personal space and enjoyment that they originally have with FB. I have not had that happen to me personally, but I have had friends that have cautioned that their FB was high-jacked. And with that they go along to all the friends on their lists and leave rude comments and usually its referring to some type of obscenities. She could try to report it. But I am not sure that they will find out who the prowler was. I hope she is feeling better and this hasnt taken away her fun and enjoyment on being on FB. I would just advise her to change her password often. And maybe tell her friends to notify her if they see suspicious posts.

Facebook gets so much bad press. I think it's a minefield for many friends and families. It's certainly not for me.

Yes. I would definitely report that to Facebook and the authorities too. something will be done about it. Maybe they can find out who did it and charge them accordingly.

Deepak, I have heard this happen to others too.I am amazed at how they do it, I mean get all the pictures etc.In one of the cases the person had posted some vulgar pictures and comments which is just not what the real person would have done.I think you can report this to the admin of facebook and they do take steps to remove the fake account...I think your friends sister should do that and also let all her friends know about the fake account...

Hi Kiran! The hackers or say imposters find out the ways to create fake accounts. I have taken note of your suggestion. Thanks for dropping in.

you can definitely report it to the FB authorities. i am not aware that this happens to a regular FB user. i have heard news about actresses and actors and prominent people who have FB accounts that are beyond their knowledge and they had not put up those accounts. it must be somebody she knows, probably one that has ill intentions.

I think one her friends created that account. Or probably someone who is really mad at her. That is very sad, I haven't encountered that but I know that it is a very difficult situation. Yes you can report it to FB. I'm not sure if they can actually track the person who did it.

Hi chi! Your assumption could be right that it could be one of her friends, who would have done this silly thing. I have taken note of your suggestion. Thanks for sharing.

A friend made an impostor account so that she can have additional person to folow her online store. No one knows her fake account except me. I think she use it for good reason. Having a fake account which you use for not good thing is not good to hear. I think the person who made that fake account is also in your circle of friends! That was so nasty. If someone will make a fake and nasty account and If I know who made it, I would humiliate him infront of proper authorities and I will be so mad!

In your friend's case, she herself created another (fake) account so that someone could deliberately follow her. It was her conscious decision, so it is acceptable. However, someone creating a fake account for harming the original account holder's reputation is really bad.

I would think the matter could be reported to the Facebook authorities but the police probably can't do anything about it.... although it is online bullying so maybe they can. Whoopie Goldberg announced recently that people were setting up fake accounts on Facebook and Twitter in her name. She has absolutely nothing to do with social networking; it's not her thing. This forced her, however, to set up her own Twitter page so that Twitter could indicate that her account was in fact the REAL account. She does not use it but she had to set it up just so people would know which one was really her. In this case it wouldn't have been a matter of bullying but someone speaking things that perhaps she would not say. There is a secure FB now. You can set it up under your account settings and then you will have the https as opposed to just http. https means your page is secure. However, you can't access any games or applications when you are on the secure page but you can go back and forth, which probably doesn't make it very secure at all.

This is why I will Never , Ever be on facebook. Chances are it was one of her " friends" that did this. Female friends can be vicious. I see Facebook as an invasion of privacy. If Anyone uses Sarah in facebook , they are not me. and if they use my real name , I'm happy someone Likes it. All I can suggest is that your friend call ot text All her friends and tell them what happened and see who believe her. The ones that do are True Friends, the others aren't.

I've never had that happen to me personally because I keep my pages private. I did have a girl that I went to junior high school with save one of my pictures without my permission and put it on her AOL profile but she never claimed to be me. She just put the picture there to get to me (I'm sure, I never got the feeling that she liked me very much, I don't know why--I heard she's just like that with people). If someone has a problem with another person they can do that just to get back at them. Sometimes it could be someone that you know that does that to you. That's why it's important to keep your photos private and just accept people that you actually know and can trust to your friend lists.

Hi we must use strict privacy settings on facebook. By this the hackers will dont get a chance to create fake profiles

Just report him/her to the admins and they will see which account is older and ban the imposter hmm it must be someone you know so i don't know really but that are my thoughts
