Mary Fisher lived in 17th Century England and began her adult life as an uneducated housemaid, she was stripped to the waist, whipped and imprisoned for proclaiming the truth She was moved to go with other believers to go to America to speak the word, where they were stripped and searched for signs of witchcraft and their books burned. They were then imprisoned till a citizen bribed the jailer to release them. Once back in England, Mary again was called this time to bring the truth to Sultan Mehmed IV. So, she set off to travel to Turkey. Despite being turned back and put on a boat to Venice she eventually arrived at his headquarters. This journey, for a woman alone, at that time is outstandingly remarkable yet that is not the end since she somehow convinced the Grand Visor to ask the Sultan for an audience, claiming she had a message for the Sultan from God That the Sultan granted this is amazing, to listen to a European Woman yet imagine his amazement when the woman turned up, not in the fancy clothes provided for her but in her own plain and travel worn clothes. That amazement must have been multiplied many times when Mary invited to speak remained silent, waiting upon the Lord. Eventually, when she did speak, proclaiming the truth the Sultan accepted her message. Truly an inspiring and edifying woman, do you not think? all the best urban

The Quakers are truly an inspiring group of people even today. We have groups here in the US that live a very simple quiet life. There are also Quakers who no one would ever know were in fact of that persuasion. Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon were Quakers.
