Dear Uterus - I've had it...

Do any men dare enter this very female discussion? We shall see (play ominous music here)... So for the last several years I've been dealing with this heavy bleeding thing. It's caused by uterine fibroids, and every year I go in and have an ultrasound and a biopsy just to make sure that there isn't anything else going on in there. And every year I say to myself, I'm 50 - this will stop soon. I'm 51 - this will stop soon. I'm 52 - this will stop soon. And then I went 8 months without a sign of anything and thought I was done. Ha, not so lucky! In June, my friend was back, and hasn't left since. Yep, we are on week 7, day 6, and no end in sight. Monday I go to the Ob/Gyn (on week 8, day 2) with a fierce, "we're not taking it any more" expression on my face to discuss options. Will it be birth control pills to stop the bleeding or something more drastic, I don't know, but I've had enough. Besides, I tell myself, all this feminine protection going into our landfills, and all the washing and rewashing of pants and underwear can't be good for the environment, right? Imagine what I can do with all the money I save on pads. Maybe take a trip to New York or Texas or something.

Go for it! I vote for hysterectomy. I had one just days before my 40th birthday because I had endometriosis (gawd-awful pain!), adhesions (from previous surgeries), scar tissue (also previous surgeries) and cysts. My right ovary was actually glued to my intestines from the adhesions, causing even more pain. I was SO anxious to get in there and have everything removed. Well, they did leave one ovary, even though we argued about it. I told the doc, "Either you take 'em both out or put a zipper on me because I NEVER want to be cut open again!" (This was the fourth time I was opened hip-to-hip and I was tired of it.) Well, he didn't put a zipper on me and didn't take 'em both out but I've been okay since then and have absolutely no regrets. My baby-making days were long gone and I saw no reason to try to hold on to something that was always causing trouble. Yeah, you'll feel soooooooooooooooo much better if you go the drastic route. Just my opinion, of course, but I've never regretted my decision. FREEDOM!!!

Hm, well that is one of the options, although I rather like the one my naturopath mentioned to me. It's less invasive, cuts off the main blood supply to the uterus, the fibroids shrink, but the uterus has some other way to get blood. Supposed to be the least invasive, but effective option. Anyway, we'll see...

My mom had a hysterectomy at 36, endometriosis, and she was quite happy to have the whole mess out! Though they left her ovaries, and that caused problems later down the road...

Well, I don't suppose menopause is far away at this point so it's quite possible that I'd pick that option, too, if I hadn't had so many nasty things going on when I was younger. I had too many years left to fight the baby-factory problems and, after a grand total of 8 surgeries in that area, I was just tired of the whole thing and wanted it all out of me. Good luck in whatever you decide. I'm sure you'll feel better no matter which route you go.

I eat birth control pills every month to control the bleeding. Although it can be painful still, I have to bear with it. I am just 30 more 20 years to go. I hope the uterus fybroid will disappear sometimes because I just have had enough.

Dared...entered....The Boss had exactly the same problem. One hysterectomy later and she is as right as ninepence. Easy for me to say, but do it. Exiting now.... seem to be unscathed....

In a way, yes. There is a procedure that will cut off the blood supply to the uterus so that the fibroids shrivel up and die. Or maybe that's more starving it...

Thanks God you going to to see the doctor. I hope it will solve your problem. I have no such problem thanks to great contraception method. I forgot how it's like to have this unwanted guest every month. I think I save a lot of money on pads. I wish you all the best.

I used to take birth control pills, but after the twins were born, I had my tubes tied, so no need for them. Although I was on them for other reasons about 5 - 6 years back...

You are my new favorite person. lol Yeah, we have been in "watch and see" mode for like 3 years, and I believe I'm done with it. Hopefully when you get to this age, you will have the same luck that my friend Diana did. She had her last period at 50, and then it just stopped. No more muss, no more fuss.

hi dawn wow yes I have heard of that shut off the blood supply to hemmorhoids and they say it works so why not firoids. that seems to be less drastic than a hysterectomy for sure. I can imagine how tired you are of the heavy bleeding and yes I think you are about at at the age where it will all shut down in menopause.I think I was 52 or 54 when I finally got shut down but that was just shutting down the ovaries as I had had emergency hysterectomy at 34 after my second childbirth tore the hell out of my uterus all do to my hypocrite d dad who had molested me just once but injured me God I was only 8,for years after I hated and feared the man. i never let myself by alone in the house with him ever again.anyway I hope you can get this bleeding stopped and will be okay Dawn.

I think that as we put up with things gone wrong with our body for so long that we do get fed up with stuff. I had that issue with my mental condition though I'm not sure I made the right choice. "If you won't give me the right medication I won't take any at all!" Lol I hope so much I don't ever get your problem, but I probably will. I hope that you and the doctor can come to a good settlement on what would be the best thing to do for your ailing uterus.

Wow - 8 months of nada and then it came back??? Ugh! So sorry, Dawn! I have a friend in mid 40's who is sort of dealing with that. She had heavy bleeding earlier in the year . . . and she stupidly didn't go to the doctor til something like 18 days have passed without it stopping - apparently it was super heavy bleeding too - like having to change pads by the hour! She ended up anemic too. She's told me for years she's had those fibroids which would eventually need to be removed but she hasn't yet. Apparently that last doozy was due to a fibroid that was the size of a baseball . . . and they've been controlling the size of it with some hormonal treatment. I guess this hormonal treatment has shrunk it and kept it at bay, but the problem is long term the hormonal treatment can be BAD. They said when she hits menopause, it should shrink on it's own, but family history tells her that won't happen for another 15 or so years - and she can't take hormones that long. So basically it's buying her time from surgery for now . . . which I don't like because she is one to procrastinate and wait until it's really bad (her work is more important than her health). ANYWAY . . . Yah, seriously - getting all those feminine products add up over a lifetime!! My family history tells me I have 10 or more years of it to buy - sigh . . .

Soaking through a pad an hour is one of the danger signs that they gave me. Hers definitely sounds serious enough to warrant surgery. I've done that a few times, but not regularly, it's like it's off, it's on, it's off...

I have experienced this same issue off and on since I was about 30. I keep waiting for them to say take it out. But I don't think that is ever going to happen. I have notice on my last few cycles, excessive large clots and it doesn't really ever stop. Maybe a day here and there. I think I should following in your steps and go to the doctor. I'm just avoiding the unavoidable, I'm sure. Well I wish you the best in what ever decision you make.

Hi Dawn. My daughter had issues like you and she had lots of pain. Her dic sent her to have a partial hysterectomy. Then a couple of years later she got adhesions reL bad and they took the ovaries and tubes also. The scar tissue had stuck and got wound around all if her insides so they just took the remaining organs out with the scar tissue. I hope you get some relief soon.

I'm at least not in any pain, it's just annoying and inconvenient, and when it's heavy I have to take iron so I don't get anemic. But I'm tired of it all...

Glad to hear you are taking iron to help prevent anemia. I'm 42 and have been taking iron since I was 30 because of this same reason. Excessive bleeding during my cycle.

You gonna miss it when its gone. Once we reach the grand age of 50, our friend will come sparingly and suddenly disappear after a lapse of few months only to reappear heavier than normal. And that is the last straw, for it will never again leave any traces in our pants. Once we stop our monthly donations the dry season sets in much to the annoyance of our roommate.

I have been having my little visitor every 2 weeks for the last 6 years. It drives me crazy. I was put on birth control to try to regulate them, but it didn't really do anything at all. Almost 8 weeks straight? I cannot imagine. I get tired enough with it for 5 days every 2 weeks.

I hate to tell you this but unless you get the thing removed, it can last until you are in your 60s. Mine did. I have two daughters that will stand in the same line you're in. It's to bad we don't have a switch inside we could turn off after the birth of the last child.

You do not need it so get the fibroids removed. My DIL did that last year in Doha and feels so much better now. or get the whole shebang taken out and be done with it. After all , the little critters are not treating you very well - so kiss it goodbye and get on with life. Waves enthusiastically: Bye bye fibroids

I am 49 and I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago. I was having the heavy bleeding. I didn't have a normal period some months! Sometimes I bled in between my periods! I tried different birth control pills! Nothing helped! I had an ultrasound done then. They found a baseball size fibroid tumor. That is when the docotr suggested a hysterecomy which I was all for! I am glad I had it done! I didn't want to go through what you are now! I know what you are going through! I went though so much feminine protection! I had accidents! Oh I am so glad I am through with that!
