Is this something to worry about?

Tonight my father (who is in his early 50's) looked at the ceiling, had a dizzy spell, and fell down back first. He was able to get up just fine with in minutes. He says he has never had anything like this before. But he claims to feel fine now, just a bit tired. From what I can tell, he is back to his old self. Before this my dad had a check up and was proclaimed healthy. He has no conditions that we know of. He drinks a lot of water everyday to. He blames his spell on the heat - which might have some validity. It is hot here and I find it affecting even me and normally I do excellent with heat. What I really want to do is take him to the hospital just to be sure. The problem is he doesn't have insurance and we can't afford an out of pocket doctor visit right now. So do you think this is something to worry about? Was it just an incident or could it be something...worse?

At his age, this is something that should be checked out. It could be just the heat but it could also be high blood pressure or a cholestrol issue. Although it isn't cheap to go to the doctor, it is a lot more expensive to pay for hospital stay for a heart attack or a stroke.

I was afraid of that. Well, thanks for the information. :)

The blood pressure thing was my first thought - which is not necessarily dangerous but would affect him more combined with the heat. It's an easy thing to control, too, with a healthy diet (unless there's some kind of external affector like job stress, etc.).

Thanks for coming in Spike - I will do more research on that. It seems most likely.

Hi! Please do not worry so much. It could be one off incident which might have caused due to heat or exhaustion and it does not get repeated, then there is nothing to worry about.

I think you are right. It has been two days with no problems, so at this point I am more or less calmed.

Personally I would be a little worried, but maybe the Best thing would be for you to wait things out, and see how he feels later on. It could be the Heat and nothing to worry about, and then you would have wasted your time seeing someone else. It is common especially if someone is a little exhausted to feel this way, but if things continue to persist like this I would get him into a local Doctor around their just for a checkup for sure.

That seems to be the best plan. This is day after it and he seems to be as much his usual self as he can be.

I understand that you do not have insurance but there are programs to help pay for those situations. Please get him to the doctor and ask that they check him out again. This could be spiked blood pressure of the early signs of a stroke or heart attack. This is not something to be taken lightly!

I'll do some research into what you mentioned then, the last thing I want is for Dad to have worse trouble.

That was my first thought as I was reading your piece- the heat. Glad to hear he drinks alot of water so he is probably hydrated. WIth now insurance I would definitely watch him and take him only in a dire emergency. You don't need the headache and stress of a big bill and boy howdy that will stack up quickly!

I just wouldn't take him unless you are sure it is an emergency.

I know! I have read a few stories on myLot of people who had to pay the dreaded medical bills...I really don't want to see that burden added to my family. I just hope indeed it is the heat and nothing more.

I think you should take him to the doctor in order to discard anything bad. If you can't afford the doctor visit, then wait until you can or maybe you could use a credit card or something like that.
