Bob Bennett: US Senator (UT), Republican
Ezra Taft Benson: Sec of Agriculture under Eisenhower, Republican
Angela “Bay” Buchanan: US Treasurer under Reagen, Republican, Sister of Pat Buchanan
Berkeley Bunker: Senator (NV), Democrat
Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon: Senator (NV) Democrat, Suffragette
Eldridge Cleaver: Presidential Candidate, Black Panther Activist, Author (Soul on Ice)
Larry EchoHawk: US Bureau of Indian Affairs
Orrin Hatch: Senator (UT) Republican
Harry Reid: Senator (NV) Democrat, Senate Majority Leader
Jake Garn: Senator (UT) Republican, Astronaut
Muliufi Francis “Mufi” Hannemann: Dep of Interior, Mayor of Honolulu
George Romney: Gov of Michigan, Republican
They are all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints... Just like Mitt Romney.
Now, take another look at that list and tell me if there is any evidence that "Mormons" can't think for ourselves. ;~D
::: btw, this is in no way an endorsement of Romney. If he isn't the candidate that you think is best for the job, then don't vote for him. Just don't make the decision based on some false notion about us :::

I'm hoping this was just a way to start a fight between you and Andy, and was not based on something someone in the media said regarding The Church of Latter-Day Saints. I'm guessing someone mentioned Romney's religion as a negative, trying to imply he would be a puppet for his Church or something? I must remind everyone that the same thing was said of John F Kennedy's Catholicsm.
As with all religions, I judge people not the group, but I can say the Mormons I have known are among the best sort of people. It is not surprising that you can come up with a strong list of Mormons who have served their country in diverse ways. The Mormons are not mindless drones showing up well-dressed on your doorstep trying to brainwash more converts, if that's what everybody thinks. Like all devote Church goers they participate in the work of the Church because they believe it is right. It would make sense that same sense of duty would propel some into politics but it does not mean the Church is telling them what to do when they get there.
I'm going to stop now, I'm getting ticked off at human stupidity.
All are welcome to join the Church Of The Holy Rat. We have short sermons, ample bathrooms and cake!

What is stupid about human behavior is the tendency to stereotype and group people into slots instead of doing some actual thinking about each individual involved.

You must be wrong because people say that a Mormons can't be elected.
The other thing is they are Americans not Mormon-Americans. We need to think of people in terms of Americans and forget all the labels. After all my fathers family was from Normandy(they did not think of them selves as Frenchmen), and Ireland. My mothers family came from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. My wife's family came from Norway, and Germany. So I guess that makes my children Irish-Norman-Scottish-Welsh-Norwegian-German-Americans. I like to think of my self as an American except on St Pats Day then I am Irish American.

Now a days if you belong to ANY church and stand up for the values taught by that church you are dubbed clueless and unable to think for yourself. Trouble is, anyone who thinks this way is 'following' an ideology too and NOT thinking for theirself.

Yup, following an ideology that can be dispelled as quickly as just naming a few examples.
