Soccer try outs..

My 9th grade son decided to sign up for soccer this year, instead of football which he'd played the last 2 years in a row. He used to play soccer on the community league as a child, and was really good at it. He never played football until 7th grade and wasn't so great. I'd been telling him to switch back to soccer.. and he finally listened. As a 9th grader, he's automatically on the "modified" team, which is our school district's word for Junior Varisty. Modified is for 7th, 8th, and 9th graders while Varsity is for 10th, 11th, and 12th. So, we got the letter in the mail about when modified soccer practices begin and all that. We also got a letter stating that there were 48 kids who signed up for modified soccer this year, so the coach was encouraging the 9th graders to try out for the varsity soccer team. Try outs are every day of this week. You must go everyday, then on Thursday the coach will say who is on the team and who isn't. If my son doesn't make varsity.. he still has a spot on modified, but the modified team will have to cut some 7th graders and possibly 8th graders because there can't be 48 kids on the team. I figured varsity would be a long shot. He hasn't played soccer since 5th grade, so he was a bit rusty, and I figured there'd be a lot of older kids with experience, and my son wouldn't stand a chance against those kids. But we went to try outs anyway. Why not? Like I said, even if he didn't make it, he's guaranteed a spot on modified since they can't cut 9th graders. Plus, the try outs would at least give him a bit of practice and get him back into the swing of things before the modified season started. So, we were there 9am Monday morning. He practiced for 3 hours. There weren't a whole ton of kids there, so I thought maybe he had a good shot, but I still didn't want to get my hopes up too high. In the back of my mind I was thinking perhaps there were some players from last year's team that did not need to try out, and were automatically on the team. Perhaps these try outs were just to fill a few empty spots left by seniors who graduated last year. So I did not get my hopes up about my son making the team. I watched some of the practice, and it looked like all the kids were evenly matched, skill wise. None of them looked really bad.. actually they all looked decent.. like a real soccer team. Mostly I paid attention to my son. I know he was good when he played as a kid, one of the best on his team. But he hadn't played in awhile, so I watched to make sure he was keeping up with the other kids. He seemed to do pretty well. So, after the practice was over my son got in the car and I asked him how it went. Still, I wasn't expecting anything. The letter said we'd know on Thursday if he made Varsity. So he says "I made the team" He actually made the Varsity soccer team as a freshmen! Yes, I am excited for him. Apparently, the kids who were there at try outs was it.. there weren't any other kids who automatically had a spot. Since only 16 kids showed up, and they were all pretty good, they all made the team! 4 of the kids are freshmen. So it's really exciting that my son is a varsity soccer player already! Though part of me would like to know if he would have made the team if more kids had shown up. Do you have any sports try out stories to share?

Congraulations to your son. I have been a cheerleader for both my sons now i'm one for my grandson. They probably wish i wouldn't be quite so cheering at times, lol.I have had this job probably about 45 years & i have mellowed some..I have cheered for them, fought for them when i didn't think they were being treated fairly etc. Some of the coaches can be a$$holes.

I am not overly concerned about a-hole coaches.. my concern, especially with the younger kids, is coaches who don't really pay attention to the whole team. I send my kids to these sports to learn how to play, and learn team work and that sort of thing.. and some coaches don't seem to notice when other kids are goofing around too much.. and those kids who don't "try" to play the game tend to ruin it for everyone else. I'm not overly competitive or anything.. but I want my kid to get something out of it, not just some free playtime. So I'd prefer coaches to keep control of their team and actually teach the kids something, not just let them run crazy, you know.

Good for u. I think sports is one of the best things that young men can get into. I'm glad your son is playing sports. It teaches them alot of things besides how to be just a good player.

These kids play at least 1 sport every year. My daughter has done dance every year since she was 3. The 8yo has played soccer a few years, baseball last year, and he's playing soccer again this fall. The 5yo is also playing soccer this fall for the first time. The oldest mostly played soccer when he was younger, and a couple of baseball seasons as well. In 6th grade he played basketball and for the past 2 years he's played football, as I said. Now he thinks he might sign up for baseball in the spring too.. we'll see.

Lat - having a bad chaotic day. Took on city hall. Just to tell you that I am so happy for your son. Cheer him on big time. He must feel great and don't worry that they took everyone that turned up as they will be sorted out as the season progresses. Great news!

Today I had to take on the major Hotel in the Caribbean as they were encroaching on the rights of our owners. I was really good and if my arms could turn the other way would have given myself a pat on the back. Maybe the good Lord may our arms the way we are so we cannot pat ourselves on the back. it is amazing to me how confident I am with everyone else except my boss. As you know he is the only person in the world who terrifies me. Well, our Prime Minister is a close second anyway, a compromise was reached. Now all my boys were athletic - track and field, football, volley ball and Jo was excellent at tennis. The daughter now was totally uncoordinated and not good at any sport. When she ran in a race she would stop and smooth her hair and then look for me and smile and waveand then she would start running again for a while and then do the same thing. When my youngest son was about 9 0r 10 he ran in a School Island competition in running. Well he finished first but was disqualified and he was most upset and kept complaining that he came first. His father and I found it hard to keep a straight face as his Dad told him that yes, he had won, but he shouldn't have knocked down 3 boys that were in front of him! He kept saying that they wee in his way but he reached first. His Dad had to explain the concept of fair play to him.A good memory. R's wedding was featured in a newspaper yesterday and the copies that I bought are disappearing fast. If I can I will send the feature to you. Sent you one photo of us together. The photographer was wonderful. Not a wrinkle in sight!

No, not really, but I was going to say that the fact that your son had played football probably helped keep him in condition for soccer. I am glad he made it, and as you said,, they all looked pretty good and evenly matched. It is nice to know. Practice and playing together will form them more tightly into a team.

My son said they all get along really well too. He was already really close with some of the kids on the team. One of the 11th graders used to live next door to us before we moved, and they played together almost everyday. The coach told them that the fact that they all get along will make for really great team work, so it should be a good season.

That's great! There are so many good things about being involved with sports. Sometimes I wish I hadn't quit basketball in the 9th grade. But I hated my coach. I would have gladly throttled that man.

My son tried out for the team that would be representing the district earlier this spring. But as this is his first year playing baseball, I didn't expect anything of it. No, he didn't make the team. But the coaches did approach us after cutting him, and told us that they were actually impressed with his progress. He played good, but there were just a lot of kids that were already in the 'select' team the year before. We were just told to keep practicing as he would be a shoo-in next year. Congratulations to your son!

I wish I could afford to let him play every sport possible.. but it's too expensive, time consuming, and exhausting for me! As it is I had to cut my availability at work down to 3 days a week when my husband is home because my son will need rides home and I don't have anyone to watch the kids while the oldest is at soccer. So now I'll never see hubby until after soccer season is over.
