Can I call myself STUPID now!

I think I am stupid for easily trusting on others without going through background checks. Sometime in May I appointed a contractor to do some renovations on my new house. This contractor was recommended to me by the contractor doing my grills so I thought he must be a trustworthy contractor who has great experiences behind him. He did blind me with his know all talks about construction. Initially, I refused to advance him cash as it is a common practice here to see some results and paying on stages of jobs completed. But somehow he had his way of convincing me that he needed advance to get the materials. I stupidly handed him half of the contracted price he was asking. What a shock I got, when he got the money he took a week to kick start the project not after burning my credits calling him everyday. He bought few bags of cements, steels and little of everything. So that made me happy to see that he was finally starting to do the job. Another hiccup happened when the laborers were asking for their pay and he was avoiding them failing to turn up to answer their needs. When he finally came he only gave them little money much to the annoyance of the workers and they left without further demand. So the work again stopped for a week before a new batch of workers came in. He kept pestering me for further payment and because I did not want to delay the completion, I paid him again. But it did not improve on the speed of works of my house. I kept calling him but he refused to answer my calls. I got fed up and with some retention money left I continued where he stopped. I should have realized that he wasn't a good contractor and kicked him out much earlier before he conned me causing a serious damage to my finance. Now I am my own contractor doing the final touch ups and I should have done it as it is not too difficult in arranging the skilled workers to do the works. It is only giving instructions and purchasing materials. The bitter experience have really made me wiser and awoken the giant in me. Have you ever experienced being in such a dismay and messy situations?

Sounds to me like he was really a big jerk.I would tell the guy that reccomended him that he was a jerk to. I hate people who do things like that.

No, I have not experienced anything similar. People make mistakes but it does not mean they are stupid. I think calling yourself stupid is an overkill. You had an oversight and were too trusting. I believe you have become wiser, and definitely not dumber. Maybe your resolution is stronger, and you will not fall for the same ruse again.

Definitely I've not only become wiser but stronger when dealing with money matters. People changed when they see money. I've learned the hard way dealing with people in the business world.

Hopefully you have learned your lesson, and you will never do something like that again. I insist on background checks on everyone I hire for any kind of business. Most people are trustworthy, but there are a few times when, had I not gotten the background check, I'd have been the stupidest people in the world. The truly trustworthy people among us know this, and won't get upset about it. However, if someone gets upset about the idea of a background check, you have a potential con-artist on your hands, upset about being caught before having a chance to get their way, and do their dirty business.

I have not only wasted a lot of money but my precious time waiting for this idiotic contractor have gone to waste. I could have easily completed the renovation in one month as it was not a major renovation but it took him over 4 months and still incomplete.

zandi458, I wouldn't say or agree that you are what you said as your situation was actually quite circumstantial. Though you did not vet your contractor, I do not think you should be blamed entirely when he was actually recommended by your other contractor who did your grills. I don't think you are entirely lost, just go back to your grill contractor and relate this unpleasant incident to see if things can be resolved without any legal litigation. Otherwise, I believe you can actually document your unfinished renovations with photographs and designs or contracts if any - and report it to your consumer rights authorities. Or, file a small claims suit against your contractor. Take care and have a nice day.

I was thinking of doing just that to take legal action against him since there was a contractual agreement we signed. But I've got some of the contract sum retained, I can still cope using the money to complete what was left uncompleted. But I make sure that this contractor is blacklisted from my family and friends.

that's the reason why i never trust anyone when it comes to money... it is just too hard to trust people when dealing with money... i will insist on results before i will give the person more money if i were in your position... he already recive 50% of the money anyway which is more than enough... also, i will tell him straight on his face that there is no free money on this world and he has to work if he wants to get paid... i've learn my lesson and won't let anybody conned my money anymore... take care and have a nice day...

Hi zandi! That was really a frustrating situation! Wasn't there any contract between you and that contractor that you both signed before the construction started? Because if there was, maybe you can go to the police and file a complaint against that person. But then I guess, contracts are only drawn between companies and agencies. Since your case was just a personal project, then I think it was normal to not have gone through a contract. Still, even without a contract, can't you bring that up to the police? I have not experienced such situation. Although I have asked some people for their services and got bad results. That did not involve huge money though. I hope I won't ever get in a situation like that. I don't like losing huge money that I have worked for.

For many years I was in charge of making construciton loans for the bank I worked for and we saw this so many times, a customer would come to us for a loan after spending all their funds for the construction only to find the contractor made off with alot of their money and little or no work was done. It's a hard lesson to learn. A great many Contractors get in over their heads and pretty soon are robbing one job to pay for another, this happens because the price of building supplies often will rise and they just don't have enough money to pay for that rise. And then of course there is always the guy who just takes your money and runs. Thank goodness there are not to many of them. Sorry this happened to you.
