Whatever Happened to State's Rights?

As the saying goes, "with rights come responsibilities". The US Constitution reserves all authority not granted the Federal Government by that Constitution to the States and to the People. But the states have the same problem with their rights as most of the people. They want the rights, but not the responsibilities. Every time a state turns to the federal government for "help" that the US Constitution doesn't authorize, the state relinquishes that responsibility... and along with it, the right. Cities and counties do the same thing. Cities have become wards of the state, as states have become wards of the federal government. The only way for states to regain their rights is for them to reclaim the responsibilities that go with it. In other words, quit turning to the federal government every time a disaster hits. Quit demanding federal aid for things like schools, state and county roads, bridges, parks, or welfare programs. Cities, stand on your own two feet for once in your incorporation! But of course, cities and states will continue to suck at the federal teet, as long as We the People insist that our cities and states NEEEEEEEED to.

I saw a story on the news last night that my town's schools are deficient according to the board of education. Only one school in my town meets federal requirements and DC says that even though that school is filled to capacity every student has to have an option to go there. Our standards are rising every year, our graduation rate is always improving and our schools are doing the best they can with what they have. Maybe if we didn't have to send all our education money to Washington so they can dole it out as they see fit we would have better schools. This is a prime example of a state giving up its rights and suffering for it. I'd like to see all 50 states secede from the union, if only to protest government interference and greed. If our states and the people refused to pay taxes the government would shrink drastically--maybe. It's just a fantasy of mine, I know it makes no sense!

States and local governments should be responsible but the problem is in the fact that the federal government takes so much money in taxes and then doles it out as they see fit. What needs to happen is to reduce the size of the federal government. They can start by eliminating specific agencies that are not doing what they were originally set up to do or if they have achieved their charge. The next step is to have the federal government do what is outlined in the Constitution.
