A lot of people just say that a border fence just slows them down and doesn't do any good. This article about one of the fenced areas demonstrates that the right type of fence combined with more border patrol agents DOES work.

We need to continue these fences and make sure they have a sufficient number of border patrol agents monitoring the area and it won't be long before the illegals crossing our southern border are almost nonexistent.
Fences + border patrol agents do work.

I agree that we need to secure all our borders. As to the people who are here wwe need to come up with a plan to deal with them and just saying send them back is not the answer. Many of these people have been in this country for 20-30 years or more. We can't grant them citizenship either. I think that a plan where they would register and be able to work legally in this country. With this they also need to find a person or family that will be financially responsible for them and help them ajust to American Life. After 5 years, from the date they registered, and if they have no criminal record they may start the process to become a citizen or choose to be a resident allain who must leave the country for one week every year and renew their status yearly. They would pay all taxes including FICA but would not be eligable for Social Security benefits or other entitlement programs.

What to do with the ones who are inside the country still needs to be determined; but, until we stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country any actions taken that would in any way benefit those already here would just encourage more to come in illegally. That is historical fact - it happened every time the government went ahead and granted amnesty to the ones that came forward in the past.
In the meantime, we have a lot of people trying to delay or prevent a full border fence along our southern border. They say a fence won't do any good. Peple will just go over the fence, under the fence, or to areas without a fence.
This article shows that they are wrong. In the areas where we do have a fence and border patrol agents, it is making a difference. And, if the entire southern border was fenced and patroled there wouldn't be a way around it (except by sea and we have coast guard there).
Of course, building the fence and patrolling the border would actually create jobs for American citizens.

We need to do better than a simple fence. The government needs to enforce the law and send illegals back to where they came from.

The laws already exist and yes they do need to be enforced. But, without some way to keep them out once we "send illegals back to where they came from"; they will just turn around and come right back.
We need a way to drastically cut down on the number of illegal immigrants entering the country; so, when we send the ones that are already here back where they came from; it will actually reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country.
We also need laws (and they need to be enforced) in each state to make life difficult for the illegal immigrants that are here now. That way, many of them will not need to be "sent" back where they came from. They will leave voluntarily and pay their own way home.
