Food Samples

I know this probably does not happen in every country, but here in the United States, some stores have people come in to give out food samples. I have been doing this for about six weeks now as a part time job. I have seen stores where the sample people are not friendly, and also where I do not think they are careful how they handle the food. I am picky about who I will take a sample from. So I guess I was wondering if you tend to take food samples in stores or shops if they are offered. I find more women refuse than men. They read labels and such, or they say they prefer their own cooking, but they will give it to their kids and the husbands often take samples. If they do not offer samples in your shops, would you like them to? Would you like to try new products? If you sample something are you likely to buy it right then? Or do you think about it and buy it on your next trip? I avoid samples at Sam's Club because there are so many of them and you can easily consume too many calories and still will want to go eat a meal afterwards.

I sometimes refuse samples and sometimes not; it just depends on the mood I'm in, I guess! I feel guilty for not buying something after sampling it, so it depends on how well I handle the guilt. No, I don't buy it just because I've sampled it. Most products are out of my price range or too processed for me. I do like to try new products, but usually don't add them to my list of regularly shopped for items.

@GardenGerty - I can understand the social aspect of it, but I'm not much of a social person, so that doesn't appeal to me, either. @stary1 - I don't cave to my guilt feelings and I understand the marketing technique, but it still makes me feel a little guilty. For one thing, I think the workers have quotas to fill, so I feel like I should support them!

I know how you feel about not sampling unless it is something you might buy. One of the biggest culprits besides sugars is salt. I did get acquainted with a new spice blend at a salmon demo in a Sam's Club. One year I had to do steaks, and we sold the store out of the seasoning they had me use. For some people getting to try the samples is a chance to do some socializing as well. When people who know each other show up at my table at the same time it is a lot of fun.

peavey LOL When I first started seeing these food samples, I used to feel guilty for not buyng something too ..Then I realized that is part of the market manipulation lol and I don't like being controlled, so now I just smile and say Thank you...and move on..

Oh, you are one of those women who entices me to try and then buy.... I must be a rare one, I love samples and can't wait to try it, problem is, then I love it and end up buying something not on my list... But hey, I probable never would even purchase a new idea unless I tried it first, so free samples are wonderful..

It is a part time job that pays pretty well. I like it when we have coupons as well. Sometimes people try it and then add it to their list for another day. Last week we did a main dish made all from Kroger products and I felt like a lot of people did it impulsively, and it involved buying six products to do it. I modified it to make it healthier and cheaper at home. I liked the idea from the demo though.

here the food samples are from people who are selling their food and beverages at the store. I only take a sample if it is something I might want, I kinda feel guilty about tasting the product but not buying it.

I know some people do feel like they should not take samples if they are not buying, but if the food is open it must be given away or thrown away. If you cannot buy it that day, you still may tell someone else how good it is.

I love food samples! I have a strong immune system so I don't mind who handles the food as long as it is cooked well if it needs cooking. My kids and I used to go to Sam's Club years ago as recreation as well as shopping. We'd cruise the aisles and sample lots of good stuff and it was fun. Sometimes we would buy the food, usually not because they are mostly convenience foods and junk. I recently went to Kroger and was pleased to see the bakery had tiny pumpkin tarts to try. Then the meat department had ham samples and shrimp cocktail! The dairy had little cups of cottage cheese, the canned goods section had ravioli, the produce section had apples (oh, those honey crisp apples!! I bought 6!!) and near the frozen section were samples of tiny eclairs and cream puffs. Then there were little squares of pizza in the deli. That was dinner for me! For free! I don't care how friendly the sampler person is, I'm not there to make friends. Just do your job well and keep the trays stocked is all I ask--and be sure to have a wastebasket there where I can throw my napkin, toothpick or whatever.

I do not like it if they do not make eye contact. You must have been to Kroger for the Holiday Open House. Did your store get the Eat Laugh Love as well? The recipe was really good. I think there is just one sampler at our local Wal Mart that I do not like, because she does not ever offer me a sample, or make eye contact, and then I have seen her putting food in her own mouth with her gloved hands. The rest of the time, I go for it. I learned of one of my favorite herb and spice blends at a Sam's Club demo. It was served on salmon.

Eat Laugh and Love is a program that Kroger has had this year that involves a product demo of an entire dish made from all Kroger products. I have only been with them long enough to do one. The dish we made was great, and fast, but of course I modified it at home. The recipe is usually available online or on cards at the service desk. We made "Savory Chicken Tacos" You would have known if it was the Holiday Open House as the demo people had Santa Hats and red aprons, at least around here.

I don't remember seeing anything about Eat Laugh Love around the store and didn't connect the samples with the holidays. To me, the holidays start after Thanksgiving and T-giving is a separate holy day all to itself. So what is Eat Laugh Love? What is it made of?

I do take samples if they are offered. I am not really watching my figure though. My wife will usually take them too as long as they are not too sweet, and if she has not already eaten. My kids go nuts for them, my 7 year old will spot a sample cart from across the store and start yelling for us to go and get the sample. I do like to try new products. If taste a sample and I like it, I will usually go and buy it. I like what I like and I buy what I like. It is probably a good thing my wife does almost all the shopping.

Kids would love to jump over the whole sample cart. What they do not realize, and many parents do not either, is that the parent or adult with the kids is supposed to hand the sample to the kid, due to a risk of allergies or of burns if it is a hot sample. You know, everyone is scared of a law suit. I usually will let a child pick it up if the parent is standing there saying okay. Our company says teens can get their own. Partly because teens have money to spend. I had samples of a cookie this week that was so so as far as sugars go. Most of the sweet was from fruit, but I am familiar with your wife's health goals, since we are friends on Gather as well and she probably would have skipped it.

We don't have those samples over here that frequently just once in a while. Don't think people are very eager to try it out since we are not really used to it. I am also not the kind of person that would run over to such a stand to try it out because it's for free or so. I also noticed that people who do offer these kind of samples (no matter if it's food or catfood or something else) seem to have nose who to talk to. Same with those who try to sell you a newspaper. Perhaps it works different over here?

I do not go for a sample unless there is a possibility I might buy the item anyway. Then it is a good chance to learn about the product first. Sometimes you can sense who to talk to about the product, and that makes it easier. Other times, you have no clue. I think it will be interesting to hear from people all over the world about the shopping habits in their stores and shops.

I do not make it to Sam's very often. I have tried some things I really liked though and I have given out things that are really good. I like it when I have coupons to give away as well.

I've not gone "sample shopping" in awhile. Me and my friends would go to sam's club and costco to do this, look around but also go for the samples. Most of the people at ours are friendly and cleanly, so I have no problem taking samples from them. I guess they have to be, to try to get the product sold.

I do not know how it is currently, but in the past, at Sam's, if people sold their quota they got $1.00 more per hour for the whole demo. I am working for a company I worked for five or six years ago. My issue is with a lady who gives samples at Wal Mart. You work at a Kroger, don't you? Do you not get demos?

I'm selective about samples that I take, but yes I do enjoy trying new things. Always a label-reader, if there isn't one available, I skip the sample. Usually they are available though. I haven't encountered many unfriendly sample-givers, but some have been pretty tired having been on their feet for several hours. It surprises me that they aren't allowed to sit on a stool or something.

I also think it is a shame that cashiers are not allowed to sit on a stool. I try to learn as much as possible on my label when I am promoting products. I know that people have allergies and that they may be diabetic or on restricted sodium.

I love to get samples from stores when they have them.I also love getting the coupons for the product along with it and also if the product is onsale it is even better and plus you can use your coupon and save even more. I also like the non-food demonstrations as well.

I have heard from my boss that our company has even distributed samples of laxatives--yuk. I am in a smaller store, that does not carry everything. I have had some demos cancelled for this reason. I had a special coffee maker last month and nothing to demo. I had coupons for it. I have another one coming up that I am afraid will be a problem for the same reason. Last week I had a good product, but no coupons. I could have sold a lot more.

GardenGerty I bet you meet all types of characters doint this..lol you could probably write a book I used to laugh that somedays at Costco one can have a whole meal from a salad to a desert.. I sample things. I have often buy from sampling and continued with that product. How do they know you meet a quota?? I will go pick up the product but it's not always with the person giving samples.

I guess they track the movement of product by computer inventory. I would not have known this except that once there was a really nice demo person in Sam's giving out samples of "Noni Juice" which tastes really gross. She made a comment about how hard it was to get people to buy it, but she had made her quota.

I LOVE sampling. I live next door to an organic grocery store and shop almost daily. I do not care if the sample people are friendly or not. I am there for the sample. And sometimes, I buy the product. Sampling can be a good marketing tool. There are times when I would not have known about the product or considered buying the product until I tried the sample. I try all samples but I do read the ingredients of the product before I purchase. But keep in mind that I live next door to an organic grocery store which has very high standards so most of the food is very good. And the samples always taste great.

That must be kind of fun for you. I feel like even if the person who takes the sample does not buy, they may tell someone else about it and they will buy it. I think the person giving the sample needs to be friendly as they represent the company. They at least need to make eye contact. I bet that you have a really varied diet, just because of where you live.

Well, because I do not buy that day does not mean that I will never buy the product. I live alone and I buy daily or every other day. I do not keep a lot of food in the house. I have a very varied diet. I love food and I am open to trying new items and products.

Hi Gerty, I always see people at Publix handing out free samples of food. They cook it up right there.. or make it. It might be a salad and a new salad dressing, or it might be a casserole with the recipe on a card that they give you... to sell their products. I don't always take from them.. but sometimes I do. They are always very clean at Publix.. I think publix employees do this. They are always nice and always clean where I live and have REALLY good manners. I do believe they are taught to be this nice to everyone to keep us coming back.

I know that various stores do sometimes have employees do in store events. My son in law represented the meats division of his company all summer traveling around and grilling steaks, burgers and franks. Most often I am involved in offereing things like cookies and snacks, so far. I did spend three days preparing a special dish though. I liked the recipe, and have used it at home, with a few tweaks.

Funny how kids are eager to try new things from the sample lady but not when they are put on their plate at home. We used to consider that lunch hitting up all the samples ladies at Sam's Club, we don't have a membership there anymore.

I had cookies this last weekend and I was amazed at the kids who would not try them. They were Quaker Softbaked oatmeal cookies. They have lots of good things in them, and were pretty good, but a number of kids did not want to try them.

I enjoy trying samples but I am funny about the presenter and the way they handle to samples too. It highly depends on that for me. I might actually go ahead and buy something right then if I am impressed. Once I had a small cup of Strawberry Banana juice by Dole as a sample and I went straight over and bought two containers of it. I have drank it pretty regular ever since. I can see your point about the calorie intake though. If there were alot of samples and when you went you were hungry..well.. I guess that is part of the reason why I have always heard you shouldn't go shopping hungry.

Occasionally our local Kroger has samples available but I think they are the only store locally that does. If I know the person and know they are clean then I will take a sample however I am very germ cautious so if I don't know them or if I do and think it's not clean I will not. If I will not eat the sample I will not allow my kids to eat it either. I usually do buy whatever he new product is regardless because I like to try new things. I have never actually been to Sams Club the closest one is not close enough but I have always thought it would be somewhat interesting.

Where I do sampling is in a Dillons, that is part of the Kroger chain of stores. We also have another company that gives samples at Wal Mart. I had applied for there, but something went wrong and I never got on. It is the same company that does Sam's. Ours is a different company. I have recruited people before that did not work out. One was seen licking the serving spoons after her demo, but they just thought it looked bad. I do not eat while I work. I did this for two or three years but had quit five years ago. I was always more careful with what my kids ate than what I ate.

I love the samples. They usually have them at Costco and Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's always has something, and I do often buy after tasting -- but not always the same day. Thats reminds me. I've still got some of that exotic cheese I bought about three weeks ago that's really good with apples. I don't hesitate to try things I'm not sure I'll buy. I didn't realize the people offering the samples get paid more if you buy the same day you sample. I don't buy until I'm ready to use something, but I often do buy things when I liked the samples. Guess I've never met an unfriendly person in charge of samples. I think stores probably do sell more of the things they sample, because people like me don't like to buy things we aren't sure we will like.

I have only known of one company that paid for meeting a quota. I do not get extra. I am enjoying doing this because I had gotten too isolated just working online. It is a good investment to have real people introduce new products.

It is okay to be picky. However if you do try new foods sometimes you find new things that you like.
