I was in the atm machine and was withdrawing and checking my account before i get some money when i notice this man at my back - he was too close and i would really think he is able to see my account balance as it is displayed in the atm machine screen!
I kept looking at him and was close to telling him to back off a little and give me the space i needed. he just stood there.
When i finished i just told him that he should have stood on the line set by the bank so as to give me my respect. i am so annoyed how insensitive he was. if it was him i am sure he would also be pissed off. And this is not the fisrt time i encountered someone who is as insensitive as him!
have you ever experienced this? i sure feel there is nothing wrong with what i felt... so annoying.

Take it easy friend.
Maybe the man was so distracted thinking about his problems and didn't realized that he wasn't online.
Or maybe he didn't care what you say and decided to act like an anormal person to get your account number or credit card number,in that case I hope you remember his face and be alert of all your movements with card and call the bank as soon as you see something strange on your account.

You're not wrong. A lot of people today have no boundaries and don't understand what it is to respect other's boundaries. I've encountered the same behavior in check-out lines at stores and groceries. I've gone so far as to keep my shopping cart between myself and the next person in line to maintain my body space. At times, I've had to ask people to step back. I may get a dirty look but they know I think they've been inappropriate.
The card swipe screens now have those raised sides on them so that others cannot see you input the pin number but I still put my hand up against the side to make sure the key pad is blocked.

thank you so much for your response. well i would understand that. for me, i have never even attempted to do this to anyone, especially not if they are to pay for their bills through atm debit cards where they have to punch their pins. and not especially just at the back of a person who is checking her account in atm.

hi there chiyosan,
it was indeed annoying. if i were you, i would told him to keep a distance from me before i get mad. i will tell him straight away that, what he is doing is not proper and if he can act at least in a civil manner, as what he acting is not a civilized attitude.
nonetheless, better be observant in this kind of act as other people are doing this just to spy on your account then will do harm afterwards.
stay vigilant.

oh yes aira i have told him to give me a distance before i even tried to withdrew. instinct told me i should just go and do my transaction fast and leave him quickly. too great i was in a public place where there are lots of people and him possibly doing any harm directly is impossible.

They are lucky it was you there and not me because when people do that to me I get a little mad and tell them they need to step back and give me my privacy. I think it is crazy that people think they can stand wherever they want when there are respectable boundaries that everyone should follow. To bad there are not more sensitive people in this world. Oh well, I guess we have to keep our sanity right? Happy Thanksgiving!

I don't like atm machines period, they don't have the privacy that we need, really. I'm visually impaired so I have to be extra careful, personally. Anyone can take advantage of a disabled person. So I always go to the teller. I don't care if I have to wait in line, I'll go the the teller because it's more safe that way and I don't have to worry about people looking over my shoulders.

Wow!! I would be a little annoyed, and be panicking a little especially if I was alone unless you are somewhere in public. I have seen it many times myself and it is not fun. People these days seem to have less respect of someone's privacy than they used too in the past. Would be nice if they thought about first, what if that was me?

You have every right to be annoyed. When it comes to money matters, especially on those ATM machines one should keep distance since we all know that it is something private and pin codes should not be seen by other people. However, there is also the possibility that the guy at your back may want to look up what your doing since he might not be knowledgeable on how to use such. I know that despite all this time, there are still people who are not good at using the ATM. But then again, do not blame yourself. The best thing the guy could have done if assuming he wanted to see how it is done is to have ask you for assistance or someone else when it was his turn to use the machine and not stick closer to you as it invades your privacy and obviously make you feel uncomfortable and even worst think that the guy maybe planning something bad.

thank you jpso. yeah. i got really annoyed. i sure am not very happy with the man yesterday. some people's attitude and actions are just way out of our control, and it really is up to them to feel that they are being disrespectful already - but i guess he does not notice that because he was too insensitive for a man.

I can't stand when someone stands near me at the ATM machine. It makes me nervous. Usually I try to make sure nobody else is hanging around waiting for the ATM before I go up myself. You never know if someone is trying to steal your code. I would have just angled my body so that he couldn't see anything. What did he say after you confronted him?

I have asked him to move a little he did not say anything, he looked as if he did not hear me and moved just one foot which was not helpful at all. I agree that i have also tried to angle my body into covering the machine but the screen was a bit high and i am sure it is quite visible. =(

I think a lot of people nowadays don't realize that there is such a thing as personal space, and breaching that space is rude. I don't think there's a standard distance, but I think more than a foot would suffice. Well, for me it does. I've also experienced that breach of personal space when lining up at an ATM machine. But what irritates me most is when you line up for a buffet. Almost always there's someone who literally squeezes in on you. Probably thinks he'll run out of food :)

that is right. he obviously know that i value that space. we were at the line quite long enough before it was even my turn. and i stood a bit too far from the one before me transacting at the atm. its a shame he does not seem to value that and have no respect for people.

You had every right to be annoyed Invading your personal space is bad enough, but it is really bad when it was at an ATM. You should have said something to him as soon as you noticed he was close enough to see your entry. Keep an eye on your account in case there is anything odd going on, and let the bank know right away. He may have just been preoccupied, but these days, and with this economy, you never know.

I haven't encountered a person like that , while withdrawing, my friend. That's because, i avoid withdrawing in an atm with a long line.
I would usually withdraw in the mall where our office is and would do it during our break time.
I see to it, that the next one is indeed far from seeing what i am inputting in the ATM machine, because it's what is proper. If i may, i would ask them to at least be in a proper distance, in a nice way.

Yes, that is annoying and irritating! You should have reprimanded him! When I experienced that situation, I just gave the person the tiger look in the eye and it always worked for me. You should have told him directly to give you space and I am sure he'll back off. I am really particular with safety and security in my financial transactions that's why I won't tolerate such acts. I suggest that when you encounter such a situation again that you voice out for your private space or either hit him and act like it was just an accident. If he still do that annoying act then confront him directly so that you would be sure to know that he felt your retaliation on what he is doing.

oh yeah, it had given me a very bad mood if you can put it that way. i shot a bad look at him, and he did not move, i told him to back off a little and he did only a few insignificant inches, actually. but well i guess that is how he really is. "bastos" as what we call here in philippines. someone who has no manners.

i hardly withdraw money from the ATM as i am making most of my payments by credit card and online banking... or if i have to withdraw money, i will go to the bank itself... but i can understand where you coming from and i will be annoyed as well if i am in your position... people should be more considerate and sensitive when it comes to people withdrawing money from the ATM... take care and have a nice day...

hi chiyosan you are indeed right. actually people are told not to crowd others at an atm machine as their code and their money transactions are private, nobody's business but their own. I always stay back from others just so they will know I am not trying to get their personal information
I w ant others to give me the same
courtesy as I give them.

thanks hatley. yeah people should be sensitive enough about these things, these dont need a special degree or years in college right? is just a basic life requirement, be sensitive, give respect due to people... some just are not born with that i guess. =(

I am annoyed with those people too. Not that I feel like they'll steal my money or anything, I just want the space to feel secure.
Also, when there is a line, when someone starts positioning himself closer to the person withdrawing, people tend to follow that. That's why when in line and i notice that the beginnging of the line is too close, i don't move even if the people in front of me alady moved. That's how i move the line back

That's not just annoying, that's even dangerous. He could have been actually spying on your account or how much you're withdrawing and held you up. I think the next time you experience this, it would be okay to tell him to step back a little. In fact some ATMs, especially those at the mall designate a line behind which the next person can wait.

i am sure, there is some experts who know what number did you press on that numeric button by just looking at the knuckle and never looking at the fingers,
they are good in estimating the distance of the knuckles because normally a person will cover his fingers while pressing on the buttons...
so what i did is i always fake the 2nd and the 4th press so that he will not catch up...
for example:
pressing the 4 pin codes:
1st press true
2nd press (never touch the button with finger) but a quick trick of gestures
3rd press (immediately press the 2nd number)
4th press (never touch the button with finger) but try to press the outside hard plate)
5th press (instantly press the 3rd number button)
6th press (follow-up to press the 4th number button)
7th press (fake to press the outside of the number button, the hard plate)
i am sure that the person behind you whatever numbers that registers unto his mind by cheating your input is being washed out and replaced by a "?"
note:
if you compare it in a boxing,
it is like a fake right jab but follow-up with a quick true left straight punch
and it is very effective
now,
if that person at my back will not keep his distance when i withdraw my cash,
then he will finally learn that "Hands are faster than eyes"

Hello there mantis. thanks for sharing this, i did not know or i have not noticed this at all - maybe i am not very observant, that is why hehe :D but thanks for letting us know... it sure will help us be aware some people would really be doing a lot of things, probably that is of ill intent.. and then wewould have been tricked. so we have to be very careful.
