Recently we attended p1kelet's university graduation ceremony in St Alban's Abbey/Cathedral just north of London. As usual, there was about 6 hours of driving and waiting for approximately 20 seconds of overwhelming pride as the little soul stepped forward to receive her degree from the Vice-Chancellor. However, before the ceremony we had to queue on a very breezy and chilly evening outside the Cathedral. Set up a slight rise from us were some thoughtfully provided portable ladies toilets - with no exterior doors! We could see straight into them. Every woman, and there were far more women than men at the ceremony, who had a need for the toilet had to advertise the fact by allowing the assembled throng view them at their toilet! Or at least the preamble and post performance handwashing, hair brushing, make-up touching up etc etc. Their need must have been great because there was no shortage of takers!

And, judging by your discussion, there were no shortage of watchers either. Do you wonder if this was the entertainment provided while people waited for the ceremonies to begin (or end)? Look at the bright side. You can thank the boss for not going home with eye strain.

True. No shortage of people trying to be too polite to look. But watched anyway! LOL.

Ah, I'm glad I read to the end there, because even though you specified "exterior" doors I was still imagining no cubicle doors, and lots of ladies on the toilet in full view of everyone else. And I was slightly horrified at this mental image! I'm glad it wasn't actually the case. Congratulations on P1kelet's gradulation! You and Mrs P1kef1sh must have been soooo proud. . Cathedral graduations are the best. I graduated at Canterbury Cathedral, and it was very exciting and special.

I imagine that you were at Canterbury at Kent or Kent at Canterbury one of them is the right way around. My best man went there and enjoyed it enormously. His graduation was in the summer and he disgraced himself by being sick... whilst talking to a friend's mother! We were very proud - very cold too! LOL. The cubicles were closed, the main doors were open. Of course the cubicle doors could be seen and there was the regulation 3" gap between the bottom of th door and the floor.....

Yes, I was at Kent at Canterbury! (I've always wondered why it needs such a descriptive name. Other universities manage with just a county name, and don't need to explain so precisely their exact location... ) I had a great time there, and it's a lovely town. Oh dear, your poor friend. That's very unfortunate, and I bet his friend's mother wasn't going to forget that day in a hurry either! Shame it was so cold for you. Especially with no external doors on the toilets, lol!

Not even a college degree will advance our socieity if we are going to open toilets. I cannot imagine what someone was thinking. Not until I saw your message was I reminded of the childhood song, "Skip to the lou, my darling" A quick look on wiki fortunately seems to indicate that the outhouse/privy was not the origin of that song. Loo was Scottish for love and it referred to a dance where people would exchange partners (like a square dance). Besides, one is more likely to run to the 'loo'!

I think those who had to use a 'privy' were grateful for the privacy. Most people would certainly agree: indoor plumbing rocks! (especially in winter)

I don't know what they were thinking but I thought that it must be pretty breezy in there! LOL. Thanks for the research.

I have never in my life heard of such an allowable thing in any sense, unless it was a new contraption or something, this is the bathroom were talking about, not some warzone!!! geezz I would have had a large bladder at the ceremony, r had to try and leave quickly for the nearest restaurant or fast food place. No way I admit I am a very shy/ private person but there is no way that even the wildest of women would look forward to such a display that was meant to be a solo event "Ya know what I mean?" If anything In would be so afraid that others were judging my bathroom habits as they would an Olympic event scoring me of my form and technical skills. Ha ha ha

We used a store's restaurant beforehand. I am a man and wouldn't have used those toilets. However many women did. Very entertaining! LOL.

That is awful. I would not have wanted to be in a bathroom with no doors. Hope something can be done to solve this privacy problem in the future.

The toilets were temporary and have been moved away by now I should think. It didn't seem to put lots of the ladies off going!

I would have went behind and did my business as I am not one for an audience. I wonder why there were no doors? Seems strange they would expose so much unless they intended it to keep everyone occupied until the ceremony!

We used a store restaurant's toilets before we got there. I was surprised how many folk did use the doorless toilets. The cubicles had doors but the toilet block did not!

hi pikey this reminds me of my graduation ceremony back when I got my BA in E nglish at age 56. My son and his friend were there in the audience and we threw out caps up in the air after we got our diplomas and then someone let loose a whole huge number of white doves and colored balloons. We did have access to a number of loos inside and nice and private. I think if I had to go bad enough I would have skipped to the loo and done my deed. lol but that my age talking. lol lol.so you had a pikelet graduate congratulations to you all.I have never been to LOndon but I have seen pictures of St.Alban's.

to determine when such ceremonies I have noticed that women alone run to the bathroom to fix this other makeup to fix your hair and get a crowd and proves that if you see them all without makeup nyamsh them know. I do not like these things. is not that good but excessive vanity is sometimes irritating. nice day!
