Ascorbic acid is said to strengthen your immune system so I take one 500-mg tablet everyday. But I still get allergy attacks easily. It maybe not serious allergy attacks, but still, my immune system is supposed to be more effective against illnesses because of the ascorbic acid. Also, usually during mornings, I sneeze uncontrollably. It's become part of my morning routine.

I don't really know much about ascorbic acids since I don't take them but will it possible that you're allergic with the vitamins you're taking in? I'm just curious :P Anyway, my allergy only triggers when I eat creamy pasta or meals. I always get heave allergy attacks (face and fingers swell with rashes galore) when I eat carbonara. I only became aware of this when I ate KFC's supreme bowl and was rushed to the hospital 6hours after. Funny thing is that I don't get allergies when I eat cream-based desserts and such (thank GOD!)

I don't think I'm allergic to my vitamins, Kei. I have not heard of anyone allergic to any vitamins. And I take them everyday and I don't get allergy attacks everyday. Ascorbic acid is like vitamin c. You're allergic to carbonara?? That's unfortunate! I love carbonara!

I don't expect Vitamin C to cure my allergies. I just expect Vitamin C to strengthen my immune system more so that it can withstand allergens. I take antihistamine when I get allergy attacks but sometimes it's just so tiring to take medicines all the time.

Secretbear, ascorbic acid is in itself Vitamin C. While Vitamin C does strengthen your immune system, it cannot cure the allergy since it is triggered by something else to which your body reacts. I recommend you take antihistamine or corticosteroid UPON YOUR DOCTOR'S ADVICE AND PRESCRIPTION.

New health reports will now say that it is NOT Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) that boosts one's immune system but, actually, Zinc. But Zinc, coupled with most vitamins like Ascorbic Acid will work even better. Allergic attacks are another thing though. Not one vitamin type will be ab;e to rid you of that. What's best is that you have it examined by an allergy specialist so that s/he can better give you the recommended medicines and prescribed list of things/ products to avoid.

Thanks for the advice. Even the doctor would not know all of the stuffs to avoid unless you tell them everything you have eaten, you encountered, you sniffed, and everything and that's kinda hard to remember!

How come I forgot that the vitamin C I mentioned below is actually vitamin C??? Agree with miadsoriano that allergic attacks is different matter than the ascorbic acid thing. It is suggested that we keep a notebook about what happen to the our health and body, the changes and the symptoms. We need to do some self check-up so that we could tell the details to the doctor.(^^)

other than remembering what you ate, @secretbear, the allergy specialist will actually conduct an allergy test on you. tests on your body's reaction to various allergens like pollen, everyday dust, other particles, and will even make note of what you put on yourself (shampoos, soaps, and the like), as well as what you are usually exposed to. It would really depend on how extensive you want the test to be. My dad had a battery of tests done to him by an allergolist, where he learned that he has rhinitis and hyper-allergy to dust, certain medications, and ingredients. He also used to experience night-time sneezes, really major ones. But he is able to avoid these from to time because he is now aware of what triggers most of his allergies. He also has "maintenance meds" for his rhinitis. So does my brother-in-law. So better have a doctor check you out.

I have used ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the past and found that it is always best with bioflavinoids added, and then in time release tablet. 500mg is not very much according to Linus Pauling, and then there are some researchers go even further. I do not know about allergy attacks and vitamin C, but I did cure a ear infection in myself, but taking 2 tablets every hours until I reached my bowel tolerance and then backed off to 1 gram every hour.. It worked where antibiotics had failed, but I didn't feel too comfortable whilst doing it, with lots of gas and frequent trips to the toilet. But this disappeared once I finished with the high dosage. I wouldn't receommend this to anyone without talking to their doctor first, but thought I would just share this in response to this discussion. Here is a webpage with more information, but please take care as there are some that say that this is way too much... http://www.vitamincfoundation.org/surefire.shtml _Derek

This is the first time I heard of using Vitamin C for curing ear infection. For me, it's kinda scary to take more than 500mg a day everyday, I might get an overdose! I have only heard of taking 1g a day if the person has a flu. But if not, 500mg is enough.

I take vitamin C every day too. Sometimes I do sneeze a couple times after taking it, but not uncomfortably like you describe. My experience is that for me the Ester-C works better. I only need 500mgs of that whereas the other kinds I need 1000 mgs to be effective.

Oh drannh, I was not saying that it's because of the ascorbic acid that I'm sneezing. I said, I expected my immune system to be better because of ascorbic acid and with that, I expected to have less allergy attacks. But thanks for sharing.

I don't know that ascorbic acid will help to increase our immune system. I rarely take any supplement just once in a while and that is just vitamin C tablet given by my sister. I don't have it as my routine to eat certain pills or whatsoever as for me- just myself only thinking that taking supplement will only make ourselves depended on it and when we don't take it, it will on the other hand decrease the immune system. I just take foods for sufficient nutrients for my body. I am not sure whether it is enough for my body but so far so good I just get flu twice a year.(^^)

I get it that you already know that ascorbic acid is Vitamin C. I also take Ferrous sulfate (iron) because I'm anemic.

I know a lot of vitamin names because they're always on TV. And I still remember some bits of what I have learned back at school. I eat a lot of fish, too and other iron-rich food but somehow, I'm still anemic.

Oh, ferrous sulfate is iron?? I don't really know the specific names and terms for all the nutrients. I am not good in that perhaps because I don't take it as my daily supplement so I am not aware of it.It looks like you take various supplement daily. I just get iron nutrient from the meat and seafood we eat but I need to watch out those seafood menus if it will bring rashes to me or not.(^^)

I am taking 1000 mg of ascorbic acid everyday. But i had a bout of influenza , last October much to my confusion. Further analysis of what has been, showed that for that month i slowed down in my intake of citrus fruits and pineapple and vegetables. Yes, those citrus fruits can really further help in strengthening our immune system But it's best that you consult a doctor for the allergy attacks.

I thought it's bad to take 1000mg ascorbic acid everyday? You might get overdosed. I only heard people taking 1000mg of it when they are sick.

Well, an alternative doctor treating my father for his cancer years ago, told us that we can take ascorbic acid as many as our stomach can tolerate. If you get an LBM after taking a higher dose such as 1000 mg then lower the dose to 500 mg. If your stomach cannot still tolerate that, then just eat those fruits and vegetables filled with vitamin C. I noticed that if i don't take vitamin C for 3 consecutive days, my gums weakens and aches.

Vitamins, and especially Vitamin C, are certainly important to the immune system and help to strengthen it but allergies are a disorder of the immune system and so are unlikely to be affected at all by a lack of Vitamin C (and certainly not by an excess). I suggest that you read up about allergies and their relationship with the immune system. This page gives useful and reliable information: http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/patientcare/healthcare_services/allergy_asthma/about_allergy/allergies_immune_system/Pages/index.aspx It is believed that about 500mg of Vitamin C daily is sufficient for normal individuals and that any excess is simply excreted. If you take more than 1000mg daily, it can cause diarrhoea. It is better to take ascorbic acid in a buffered form, for example, as Sodium Ascorbate or Calcium Ascorbate, but then you should be aware that Sodium Ascorbate will increase your sodium intake.

Why not try eating fruits everyday that are rich in vitamin C? Have you tried this in a consistent manner? Like for example, eating orange everyday or apple to name a few. Vitamin C is much more potent when you get it from eating fruits and vegetables than taking a synthetic vitamin C tablet. I hope this would help you in any way. Happy mylotting!

Well, one way to keep our body healthy is to take vitamins. Vitamin C is indeed important. But I think you should also do other things such as exercise and good diet to insure that your body is prepared for whatever conditions that may affect you. May it be nature or other factors such as dust and viruses.

good day secretbear, three weeks ago, i have had a chat with the doctor of my mom. as she advised my mom to observed her medicine intakes as my mom is somehow encountering a mild cough. the doctor says to my mom, if her cough did not stop by means of antibiotic, it means, one of her medicine is a contributing factor to her cough. that, a part of her medicines triggers a coughing effect. and i was surprised as i heard those lines from the doctor. that, i didn't know that, some medicines today will do harm to our body. and perhaps, your intake of ascorbic acid should not be taken everyday. as this maybe weakens your body immunity system instead of making you more stronger. try to observe it, maybe, what the doctor have told me is somehow applicable to you, as not to take everyday the ascorbic acid.

Hi secretbear, We share the same prolem. I also have this concern everyday of my life. I take vitamin C regularly too. I guess the reason why I have this because i have less exercise and is not really eating a lot of vegetables. And the fact that when I go out, i can't avoid pollution from vehicles and pollen. I hope you do get better though.

Hi dheckerz! I eat a lot of vegetables but I still get allergy attacks a lot. I used to jog weekly and I think it helped lessen the attacks. It's just unfortunate that I don't get to jog anymore because of the weather.

You still need to exercise to boost your immunity system, a person who works out at least 1 hour a day have stronger immunity, also they have less allergies. so yeah even if you are skinny you need to work out at least 1 hour a day to release the toxins from your body and boost your immunity from allergens.exercise can give you stronger lungs, stronger lungs can give you better immunity from allergies.

Is there such medication? So far, i've only trusted in my own immune system and i dun like to depend on medicine or even vitamins I guess the tablets doesn't help much in your case and the dosage is not strong enough? :O I used to experience the same thing u went through in the morning and i found out it's due to my pillow case. It's usually the case when i change to a new casing, as before i used it, it's kept a drawer. Maybe because of the way and where it's kept, some kind of reaction happened and with barely enough sunlight into my room, not enough time for the reaction to go off, i'm already sleeping on it, thus causing me to sneeze badly over a few days.

We are advised to consume natural Ascorbic acid or Vitamin C from the vegetables and the fruits. Artificial Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid is not advised to consume too much because easily we shall have skin problem. About sneezing, the Chinese believes diet or controlling our daily foods consumption will be very helpful. We shall not drink any cold drink to make our sneezing problem worse. My niece was having uncontrollable sneezing problem when she was a teenager. She was having a habit to drink cold drink all of the while. After seeking a treatment from a Chinese doctor, she had to to stop drinking cold drinks. The Chinese doctor prescribed her to eat some herbal with dog meat. After consuming this prescription twice, she was totally recovered from sneezing and she stopped her drinking habit forever. Whether you believe it or not, you should use your own judgement. Good luck to you.

I am taking Fern-C thought not on a regular basis. Only when I remember to take it From their website it says that Fern-C is a Vitamin C in Sodium Ascorbate form. And unlike the typical Vitamin C it is non-acidic and is said to provide all the benefits of Ascorbic Acid but without the sting, so it is said better than ascorbic acid. If you are having allergy attacks. I think it is best to consult a doctor which one is better for you to take.
